G15 5511 compatible RAM and SSD

I just purchased this laptop and I am planning to upgrade the RAM and considering installing a second SSD when I do. I have seen lots of conflicting information online about what is or isn't and what should or shouldn't be compatible with this laptop. The specific model I ordered isn't there now to link but has the following included:

11th gen I5-11260h processor (12MB Cache, up to 4.4 GHz, 6 cores)

RTX 3050 TI 4GB GDDR6 graphics card

512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive

8GB 3200 DDR4 RAM

3-Cell Battery, 56WHr (Integrated)

FGA Module - Fixed Hardware Configuration

I will definitely be switching the RAM out for a pair of dual channel SO-DIMM sticks. I'm just not sure if I'm going to get a 2x8 pair or spring the extra $40-55 to get a 2x16 pair. I think I am set with compatible RAM to buy but would welcome suggestions as well. My problem is compatible SSD. I have read things saying this should have no issues with PCIE 4 and things saying it struggles with it. I don't know what to believe. Reviews of the processor say it's PCIE 4. People with different versions of the 5511 have said different things about SSD's working or not at the right speeds and in slot 1 or 2. I haven't seen anyone saying anything specific to my build (unless they just weren't mentioning their build so I don't know which 5511 they had. So, any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I have about three weeks before my laptop will get here to hopefully figure this out.

Hi there JT713,

i did take a look into the specifications of this model and no matter what kind of CPU variation you got - you are bound to the motherboards limitations - which is quite unique in terms of notebooks.

What you could do - install CPUZ, and take a look on the very first page - you see there usually your chipset information / type of motherboard of your notebook and google that up and compabilities.

From what i did dig up out of the official Dell information regarding this Model ->

- pci-e bus up to gen 3

- max dual channel ddr4 up to 3200 mhz - 32 GB max.

I would not WASTE any money in a PCI-E 4th gen SSD - that would be a invest in something which really makes no advantage in a system only being capable of using GEN 3. Stick with a good priced gaming GEN 3 SSD which fits your needs in terms of max read and write speeds and overall storage space - thats my 2 cents.

Same thing goes with the DDR 4 which you are going to replace - > you can , just for fun, try out the crucial online detection software and see what kind of RAM Modules they will offer - that would be a good starting point for you to sneak up onto other manufacturers and choose the kind of brand and module you personally like to. Bear in mind, that there is a maximum of speed being supported also with this matter - so 3200 is the end of the flagpole.

Another good starting point would be - open your case , take out one of the installed SODIMM DDR modules and see what is on the sticker (what numbers does it show, maybe you can write them down here, or make a screenshot) - you cant do anything wrong when you choose your new modules matching those numbers in terms of  the RAM specifications.

Hope that helps, man!

Cheers

I wish I could say that was super helpful. Gen 3.0 SSDs are usually just as expensive and often more expensive now than gen 4.0 SSDs. It feels kinda crummy paying the same for an older, slower SSD in the same size if you want to buy a reliable brand. Have and SSD recommendations?

BTW, it's been confirmed in another thread that this laptop does support up to 64GB of RAM even though it only lists support for 32GB. I have no idea what you would need that much RAM for in this machine, but you can put it in and the laptop will read all of it so long as you use the right ram. It's very particular. Something to do with XML support (or lack thereof) and latency at CL22 and voltage only up to 1.2. People can't seem to get any Kingston or Corsair ram to work but G.skill and Crucial seem to be fine within the right specs.

Update:

I received my laptop today. Looks fantastic. Runs nice and snappy. Love the orange keyboard but I am still getting used to it (transitioning from a 13").  Mostly I am very happy. My only disappointment so far is finding out they don't include the mounting bracket for the second SSD slot in these things. And they make you pay for them if you want one. That sort of thing should just be included. The bracket and heat spreader were cheap enough but the screws were ridiculous. $11 per screw. Who charges $11 for a single 1/4" screw? Makes buying all of it from Amazon cheaper since they just include the screws instead of making them separate parts you have to pay for.

Update:

I purchased a 1TB WD Blue 570 SSD and that is installed, allocated and working just fine. Ram on the other hand....

I bought the exact same G.Skill Ripjaws ram that several other people with the 5511 on this forum have bought and installed without any issues. When I installed them however, my laptop entered an endless loop of blue BSOD. windows stopcode errors. It cycled through at least a half dozen different error codes. At one point a white dell screen came up and ran a hardware scan and it didn't find any problems but the laptop would just not work. I got to windows every four or five reloads but it only came up for two or three seconds before that same BSOD 'Windows couldn't load properly'. I put the original ram back in and the laptop is working again.

So, did I just get bad ram? Should I try buying another set of the G.Skill? Or should I move on to another ram for my ram upgrade?

Update:

Replaced the G.Skill with ram bought direct from Crucial (they had the best price for Crucial ram) and just installed it. It is working just fine and reads as exactly what it says it is. So, I guess my upgrades are complete, up, and running now.
