G5 5590 Firmware Update 0.1.12

Hi,

I recently did a BIOS update on my system (1.12), which caused over-heating, and on Dell's advice, I rolled the BIOS back to 1.11, which was the last stable one.

Last night I got the notification from Windows Updater, however, that there's a Dell, Inc - Firmware update (0.1.12.0), and I just wanted to double check that this doesn't include a BIOS update as well, as I really don't want to risk my laptop at this point. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

@lacasadealan I have tried this with 0 success, unfortunately. I, like the poster above, just purchased this machine (literally--it arrived today at 4:36 eastern) and have done nothing but attempt to tweak these settings in XTU over the past 2 hours. Unfortunately, my efforts have been futile and the slider settings are still grayed-out. Any ideas?

@Ashrod_307 @lacasadealan

UPDATE: After my previous post I decided to fool around just a bit longer and, thru some trial and error, I somehow managed to re-enable the UV settings in XTU. Now, I can't be 100% sure the below is accurate to a T, but this is more or less what I did:

I followed @DAllein instructions from the earlier post, but my process unfolded slightly differently. Here is ultimately what I *think* worked (partially copy/pasted from @DAllein for consistency):

1) Rolled back Firmware to 1.11 (via Dell website)

2) Booted to Win and checked that Voltage control doesn't work

3) Restarted to BIOS

4) Did Restore Settings to "Factory reset"

5) Booted to Win and checked that Voltage control doesn't work (again)

6) Restarted to BIOS

7) Did Restore default BIOS settings and apply

Booted to Win and checked that Voltage control DOES work and BIOS version shows 1.11

9) UPGRADED back Firmware to 1.12 (via Dell website)

10) Booted to Win and checked that Voltage control STILL DOES work and BIOS version shows 1.12

I understand this is incredibly convoluted but I ended up with the desired outcome of being able to tweak the appropriate settings in XTU. I don't know if this will help anyone but, as far as I can tell, this is what I did and this is how I got XTU to unlock UV sliders. I do hope this helps and I apologize if it does not... I'll buy you a beer sometime to make the lost hour of trial and error up to you.

GOOD LUCK!

Will give this a try right now, hopefully it works

Brilliant, that's just great news. I'm glad you were able to work it out. Without UV, the cooler this notebook provides can't handle the heat properly, there is just too much of it. Then the CPU do not perform properly.

Cheers, mate!

@renaldojvish3

I've tried this but it seems that is there no luck once again.

The laptop does roll back to BIOS 1.11, but when I factory reset it automatically updates back to 1.12. I've tried it twice and it happens both times. The UV settings are still greyed out nonetheless, even if I restore back to default.

Maybe it's best if I give up and admit defeat at this point

I succeeded on a new out-of-the-box Dell G5 5590 (came with BIOS 1.12 installed) of getting undervolting working. This is what I did

1. Turn off auto BIOS update in BIOS settings: it's the option under security: turn off UEFI updates

Also uninstalled the Dell Assistant (this also pushes auto updates) I think I am sensible enough and grown-up enough to check manually thanks Dell.

2. Downgrade to 1.10 BIOS (I assume people know how to do this)

3. This next step is the most important! Go into BIOS settings and reset to Default (NOT factory). I think new computers come with the Plundervolt fail-safe wired into the factory settings.

4. Restart PC and REINSTALL Throttlestop (the INI file must be replaced with a new one). Boot into Throttlestop and you should be able to apply an undervolt.

I went from a score of 1618 on Cinebench R20 to 2791 and my PC is now cool as a cucumber even when under maximum load.

Good luck everyone!

i updated to 1.13.2 from 1.11.1 just now.

cannot undervolt.

I tried downgrading from .12 to .11.1 before, resetting to bios default can undervolt again.

and now updated to 1.13.2, i can't undervolt.

Luckily i repasted with artic mx4 and the result is amazing

how's the bios released in June

will it lock undervolt back after updating from 0.1.11 ?

Dear All,

So, now we have no way to use XTU in new BIOS?

We should contact Intel to support on this issue, we need more and more people report this issue to Intel.

Laptop of Dell is very easy throttling without using XTU or Throttlestop.

Dell must have responsibility contact to Intel on this issue to improve quality of Dell laptop, make it cooler for using.

Just an update for anyone else finding this thread looking for help. I just updated to 1.14 without knowing about this feature breaking issue and the factory reset option in the bios fixed it for me without having to downgrade to earlier bios.

I ran into this problem just now. I've tried all the options with driver updates, Windows demolition, and the like. Is it possible to return the performance to my laptop (G5 5590)? Fortnite has always had 100-120 fps, but now it's not more than 40 ...

Can you clarify this a bit, since as far as I can tell there isn't a 0.1.14 BIOS update for the G5 5590.

Hi there,

That sounds like you have a more serious problem on your hands. Thermal throttling will definitely lead to instability and a drop in performance, but not a drop of 60+ FPS.

Check your drivers, check that your game is using the High Performance NVIDIA card in "Geforce control panel > Program settings", Check that in "Alienware Command Centre" you have "Thermal > Performance" and "Battery > High Performance".

And if that doesn't help, contact Dell because your laptop is probably toast.

Good luck!
