HEVC encoding generating way too much heat

Dell G15 5520

Dell G15 5520

my new Dell 5520 with an i7-12700H and Nvidia 3060 is running extremely hot when encoding 4K HEVC x265.

the GPU is idle as it only the CPU thats being used for the encode. HWinfo is reporting 99c temps and limits being hit. ive got the alienware app set to optimised as when on ultra performance the problem is even worse. i think this might be down to a poor grade or poorly applied thermal paste. the laptop is on a table with the back raised up to allow better airflow.

any ideas how to get this sorted so i can at least use the laptop for video encoding work.Untitled.jpgUntitled2.jpg

these temps were with optimised setting in alienware. if i use ultra performance its a mess of throttling errors in HWinfo.

is a Dell engineer able to visit to repaste with some proper thermal compound like MX4?

The answer to that is, no.  And the question that's open is whether the system is running that hot in everyday use (web surfing, email, etc.)?  If it's not, you may well be told the system is operating within its design limits -- it's a low-end gaming notebook, not a high performance workstation.

If you are going be doing extensive video encoding, a desktop system or a high-end mobile workstation would be far better suited to the workload than this entry-level gaming notebook.  If the system is new, seriously consider returning it in favor of one designed to handle that workload.

that would make sense if i hadnt already used a Lenovo Gaming 3i with the same cpu on the same workload, which is classed as a budget gaming laptop,  and not noticed the same high temps and throttling. also your quote about web sufing/email ive got another forum post about the high temps when doing that.

this isnt an isolated issue as ive spoken to another user with the same problem. its Dell using poor paste and/or poor application.

If you're convinced of that, arrange a warranty repair.
