Inspiron 13 7375 2-in-1 Freezing issue

I bought this laptop 3 months ago. Since I've been using it, I always experience the screen freezing completely.

1) First time it happened was when I was downloading a game on Steam, it would freeze after five minutes of downloading, would not respond to anything. I gave it ten minutes to resolve but it was still frozen

2) Second time it froze completely was when I connected a external hard drive.

3) Third time was when I was installing a video editing software. It froze midway of installation.

I always have to shut down by pressing the power button. What could be the issue? I ran diagnosis twice and it said no problems were found.

Edit: I also remembered the laptop randomly shuts down itself, just like a few minutes ago while installing PowerPoint.

They are fighting hard to not repair or replace for me. Really disappointed with Dell because of this

First solution: Quit the offending program.

If your laptop freezes only when using a certain program, then it implies that the program is at fault. As an immediate action, close the offending program. If the program is unresponsive, use the Task Manager to close it. The usual way to launch the Task Manager on Windows computers is by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys simultaneously or Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys for a faster route.

Second solution: Forced restart.

If your laptop won’t allow you to open the Task Manager as it’s totally unresponsive, then you can do a forced restart instead.

  1. To do so, press and hold the Power button on your laptop for a few seconds or until it powers off.
  2. Or if necessary, you can just unplug the AC connector and remove the battery.

Third solution: Let your laptop cool down.

Heat build up likewise cause your laptop to freeze at times. This usually occurs with prolonged and heavy usage, which eventually caused the processor to become exhausted. That being said, try to feel the laptop chassis. If it’s getting hotter than usual, then that’s likely causing your laptop to freeze.

Also check and ensure that nothing is obstructing the  airflow. Dust can block the heat and air to pass through the vents on your laptop thus need to be cleaned up. But before cleaning up the vents, power off your laptop, remove all power sources, then use a compressed air can to blow the dust out of the vents. Use the compressed air according to the directions on the side of the can to prevent causing damage to the computer. Don’t use your mouth to blow the dust out of the laptop to prevent moisture that eventually cause permanent damage.

Fourth solution: Check the current memory status.

To rule out the possibility of insufficient memory causing performance degradation on your laptop as manifested by frequent system lock up. Here’s how to view the available and used memory on your lap2">Open the Task Manager.

  • Go to the Processes tab. There you will see all various processes running on your computer.
    • If you have opened any program, close it then take a look at the percentage of physical memory used.
    • If it shows a large percentage in use even without any programs running, then that’s likely the problem.
    • If the physical memory is mostly free, try to open the last program you have used then open one program at a time. Doing so will let you determine if any of your frequently used programs is taking up all the memory space on your laptop.
  • Alternatively, you can run a memory test through the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool.

I still have the same issue with the same laptop, with the Ryzen 7, and I wonder if it has something to do with the power profile setting since I changed it on both battery and when plugged in to Better Performance instead of Best Performance.  I did change it earlier today and then the freezing started again. It's not one particular program and I'm running Windows 10 with the 1909 update and running The 19.12.3 Adrenalin Software.  A new one was released today and I haven't tried that yet.  I'll install it and update and see if that makes a difference.

I have the 256Gb SSD and it has been frequently freezing almost since I first got it.  Have spent hours on phone with Support Center, tried all of the suggestions in this forum on this issue, including uninstalling the Dell Power Service bloatware, attempting to indentify particular programs (to no avail) and various attempts to identify memory issues or overheating.  Nothing works.  Now my laptop has passed its warranty and I can no longer get any help from Dell.  If I cannot find a fix very soon, I will junk this machine and will actively campaign against Dell with anyone who will listen.  I'm completely fed up.

Same issue here, I've updated bios, drivers, checked event viewer to see logs, but still can't quite find what's going on. It's a shame because otherwise, this is a really nice laptop for the price. It is random, it doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing it will just lock up.

Power options doesn't seem to do anything either. Mem testing and nothing is wrong.

Go to the "power options" and set everything to "never" (never shut down/standby or go to sleep)

    It solved it for me!

I have the same problems for 3 of 100+ laptops we have, the problem is related power management system. for all three that users return to me I had to push the power in completely, and it have to be OEM power supplies. The work around I had to do is messing with it bios setting. But if I use OEM power supply I never have any issue, and push it all the way in tight, not even 5% loosely out.

Are you saying you cracked the laptop case and reseated the power supply connections and the overheating problem stopped? That doesn't make sense. I could see how that could cause intermittent power problems, but not overheating. Perhaps I'm not understanding you correctly

So, I just picked up a Dell Inspiron 13-7375 2-in-1 Ryzen 5-2500U from an ebay auction (like new condition) for pretty cheap price (little over $200).

Before bidding I saw various posts like this about freezing / rebooting issues, and low and behold when I got the unit in today's mail and fired it up, it started behaving with these symptoms - random black screen/reboot and random hard-freeze (only pressing and holding power button to power-cycle gets it out of freeze).

It would do one or the other every 5 to 10 minutes.

I tried installing latest full AMD Radeon driver software (there were no AMD Radeon drivers installed), that took about 4 freeze/reboot attempts because it kept freezing while trying to download the AMD Driver!

    Anyway that did not work...

I fiddled with a few BIOS settings and also tried setting the Power Saving modes to Never Sleep / Never Shutdown Display either on battery or plugged in (have been running plugged in the whole time), but no dice.

Then I tried this BIOS setting, turning off (Disabling) the PowerNow! feature and now the laptop has been stable for the last 3-4 hours while running a number of high-stress software tasks all at once!!

    I am running these simultaneously:

    • CPU-Z (setup to stress 8 threads of CPU)
    • FurMark (a very intense Graphics stress program)
    • HeavyLoad (only set option to stress the CPU and Disk)
    • Manually running web/browser Speed test every so often and browsing the web (like writing this post), etc.

And monitoring all of the above with TaskManager

So, it seems that Dell (or whomever they use for BIOS, forgot to look last time I rebooted) may have a BIOS issue with their implementation of PowerNow!

For those who do not know, PowerNow! is AMD's dynamic frequency / voltage scaling technology for laptop processors that adjusts the CPU's clock speed and VCore automatically when the computer is lightly loaded/idle to save battery power and reduce heat/fan noise.

My next step will be to make sure I have the latest BIOS from Dell.

If not I will get that and then try turning PowerNow! back on.

The downside to having PowerNow! disabled (besides extra heat and fan noise) is a decrease in battery life...

Well, I thought the above had fixed it but after just about a full day of using the laptop the issue came back.

Now I am in the process of reloading all the drivers from the Dell support site, having first downloaded their SupportAssist tool.

I have also updated the Graphics drivers by using AMD's similar tool from thier web sit which examines your computer and then installs the approriate AMD up-to-date drivers.

So far the issue is happening less often than before.

I did find other threads on this Dell site concerning other Inspiron models with similar issues and when they do end up getting a fix it usually ends up being software related and it seems that maybe the very best course is to do a clean reinstall of Windows (what they called a 'Nuke-and-Pave', i.e. a complete reformat/wipe of the drive [the Nuke] and then a fresh install of Windows with 'minimum' drivers [the Pave]).

    I may try that...

That explains the $200 price. I just disabled the PowerNow, and turned off all the power limiting options to save battery. My problem wasn't as bad as yours though. So it only happens during critical times. Like during the middle of a conference or something. It's the new AMD "Murphy" chip I'm sure. Anyway, poor quality control and even worse customer mitigation. The couldn't care less about their customers.  AMD, once and for all for me, is now in the dustbin of history.

FYI, I took the laptop off my son's hand's and formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 home. It did not fix the problem. This is known problem which AMD hasn't fixed. No such problem with intel based chip.

    December 19th, 2021 12:00

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion (i.e. AMD vs. Intel), I will just say searching on this site about issues like this find lots of Intel as well as AMD based systems / chips...  I tend to think most of the time they are S/W based and therefore more a blame of all of the parties involved in a given system build: Microsoft plus Dell, the Motherboard vendor, Intel/AMD, and the various vendors of other chipset on the motherboard (mainly Intel and AMD and various others)...

Anyway, back to this particular system - after a clean Windows 10 install and then installing the Dell SupportAssist tool and using it to install JUST the drivers that it recommended and NOT any others (i.e. the AMD Radeon S/W will look on the Web and find 'later' SW to Install, I did NOT allow this and stuck with the Dell download versions). One thing to note in this was that one of the drivers, for the Intel WiFi/Bluetooth module, was labelled as a 'critical' update!

Also during the install of the AMD Radeon chipset drivers and Graphics drivers I selected 'custom install' instead of 'express install' which allowed me to choose to 'wipe' the old drivers clean before new install of drivers (requires more 'reboots' but should end up with cleaner install).

So, since completing this all around 9:30AM this morning (central time) I have been using this computer, browsing the web, installing Microsoft Office, reading email, some online Xmas shopping, watching some TV via the Fubo browser app and now updating this reply, all with no freeze/reboot issues!

So far so good - will come back and edit the following time with No Issue:
    Little Over 4 Hours

UPDATE TO ABOVE: So, looking at the installed drivers, somehow in all the above 'driver clean / reinstall' the graphic driver ended up as the generic Microsoft driver (Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Version:10.0.18362.1) - this seems to solve the problem, pointing the issue at the Graphics Driver (i.e. Dell + AMD), since my intended use of this computer is not gaming, etc. and can live with just OpenGL v1.1 graphics I leave as is for now and see what happens.

Hope your latest fix works. Please keep us updated. It appears that you, like me, consider this a "challenge" thing. It would nice to get something working that looks good on the surface, but was pretty much written off by everyone who owned it. Hence the reason my son abandoned it.  He needed it for work and it continually failed at critical times.

I'm sure AMD makes a fine product. But based on a critical institutional use, it's a fail. There's a saying in manufacturing using devices at critical points "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". Even though IBM is fading into history, the maxim is still valid. Don't buy mee-too brands to save a few bucks for critical functions. If it fails, your head will be served on a plater. If the "top-tier" stuff fails, well then "Stuff Happens". Unfortunately, the real critical fail is Dell dropping the ball on a clearly flawed product. As is evidenced by the numerous complaints here and across the internet about the product. Dell abandoned the product and the customers who owned it. That is unacceptable.

As for me, after formatting etc.,  the laptop works "most" of the time. I use it as a throw away travel computer. Not for business, mind you, nothing is on it of importance. So if the errant maid steals it, or if it is smashed against a bulkhead by a gorilla baggage handler. No Loss.

If you, or someone actually comes up with a permanent fix to the problem I will apply it and give the laptop to charity.

    Good Luck!
