Inspiron 5505 no bootable device
Inspiron 5505
I have posted a related question under SupportAssist session:
I'm posting the question here with update thinking it is more related to Bios settings.
Background: the pc came with a 250 GB ssd (HD0) and Win10 home. I added a 2TB ssd (HD1) and installed Win10 pro to this HD1, removed the Win home, later upgraded to Win 11. Recently the touchpad had no response so I reinstalled Win 10 pro thinking a Win11 upgrade was the cause, but this didn't fix the touchpad problem. Then I came to dell.com updated the drives and installed Dell's SupportAssist and a new problem appeared.
Now "no bootable device" shows on startup. Below is the list of settings in bios and the things I have tried according to the info I learned:
- Originally there were choices of UEFI and Legacy under the "Boot" tab, I wasn't able to change the order but could delete the UEFI and start Windows. But I need to do this each time I reboot the PC bc UEFI would come back.
- deleting "legacy" was saved in the bios. Now I have to manually add "legacy" to the boot option and deleted UEFI each time I reboot the pc.
- No help with disabling "Secure Boot". No "advanced boot" option available to add legacy. The Boot tag remains the same. "Secure Boot" cannot be enabled back after I changed "Select Secure Mode" to "Audit Mode"
- I've tried several Bios versions including v1.0 (newest v1.12) without help. They all looked same and updating the Bios didn't change the settings.
- I removed HD1 reinstalled Win10 on hd0 hoping Windows can re-establish UEFI booting but this didn't fix the problem. Now the system asks for Bitlocker recovery keys because one system is linked to my company's MS account.
- The "F9 setup defaults" option only changes "Fast Boot" options to "Minimal" without any help.
- The touchpad sometime works sometime not during the troubleshooting. Luckily it works now.
- There are a few related pictures in the original post if they are helpful.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your reply. I have tried this method but the "Advanced Boot option" is not showing on my laptop. It seems that this is a simplified/shortened version of bios.
However, I was able to reinstall Windows in UEFI mode. Now the system starts normally except that the bios settings including secure boot cannot be changed back to default.

Go to Bios Set UP . Disable the secure boot . 2)"" Advanced Boot option" on the left side ,make sure that ""Enable legacy option ROM "" is selected 3) Now Go to "Boot sequence " and select "Legacy" in Boot list. Restart computer and you can see the Boot devices list
