Inspiron Various Issues

Hi ...

I have an Inspiron 3593 with Windows 10 recently updated to ver 21H1 May 2021 update. Recently it started taking on average 5 minutes to shut down and 4 minutes to boot up. I searched the web and tried everythibng I could find to resolve the problem. Nothing made a difference. Two weeks ago I did a full reinstall of Windows 10, completed all updates and ran all options in Dell SupportAssist. It still takes 5 minutes to shut down and reboot.
I then started with F12 to run at diagnostics. Looking through the BIOS and config options I noticed under Configuration 'M.2PCle SSD-0/SATA-2' I have never installed an SSD and the original HDD is still listed under boot options.
What exactly is this and where does it come from? Do I need it and if not how do I remove it?

Your experience is quite similar to mine. Except my Inspiron would sometimes take up to 15 minutes to startup while thrashing the HDD. Startup / shutdown now take less than 30 seconds with an SSD.

The long time to shut down and reboot is because your Inspiron is running from the HDD. Booting instead from an SSD would improve performance

That bios configuration setting, even if the SSD slot is checked, does not necessarily indicate that an SSD is present.

Thanks for the response ... much appreciated.

I understand that an SSD would improve performance.  My issue is that up until a month ago the close down and start up was 'normal'  I never had reason to time start up but I estimate that close down and startup was within a minute to a minute and a half.  That suddenly jumped to 5 minutes.  It wasn't a gradual increase.  I literally happened overnight.

On the SSD in configuration ... that is also new.  It was not there before and I was hoping to find out where it comes from and if I can remove it.

Thanks again.

Clearly I'm in for an SSD and will install one soon.  It is a solution but still leaves me not knowing what the problem is.  I purchased the Dell because of the 12 years problem free Vostro 1710 I had ... my first Dell.  Fortunately when I purchased the Inspiron I included an onsite service plan.  Within the first year my HDD and motherboard had to be replaced.  Now I'm in for an SSD.  I called Dell support twice and both times the call was answered and the connectiion lost after saying hello.  You are the only person that has answered so again thanks.

After this experience and the total lack of support from Dell I will not consider buying another Dell product.

Task Manager might help identify the problem. On the Processes tab, it should be possible to confirm whether the hard disk is the bottleneck. And if so, what processes are causing the slowdown.

I will look at that thanks ... I've had a few busy days and will get back to it in the next day or two.
