Password has changed without me making the change

Hi. My password has now suddenly changed and I can't log in, but when I try to reset or repair the laptop, it still asks for my password. I don't have a recovery disk. Is there another way to do this?

There are a few other ways you can try to reset your laptop password without a recovery disk.

  • Boot your laptop in Safe Mode. This will allow you to access Windows without having to enter your password. Once you're in Safe Mode, you can try to reset your password using the following steps:
    1. Click on the Start button and select Power.
    2. Hold down the Shift key and click on Restart.
    3. When your laptop restarts, you'll see a Choose an option screen. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
    4. After your laptop restarts, you'll see a list of startup options. Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode.
    5. Once you're in Safe Mode, you can try to reset your password using the Reset password link on the login screen.
  • Enable the built-in Administrator account. This is a hidden account that has administrator privileges. You can enable this account and then use it to reset your password. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Boot your laptop in Safe Mode.
    2. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
    3. Type net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter.
    4. Restart your laptop.
    5. When your laptop restarts, you'll see the Administrator account listed on the login screen.
    6. Log in to the Administrator account and then reset your password for the account you're locked out of.
  • Use a password recovery tool. There are a number of third-party password recovery tools available that can help you reset your password. These tools typically work by booting your laptop from a USB drive or DVD and then scanning your hard drive for your password.

Hi. That's great, thanks for those suggestions. Do I need to do something to boot it in safe mode please? Also, does the SHIFT + Restart work?

I've tried option 1, but there isn't a reset password option on the login screen?

Also, I did the F2 for Set up and went into the Admin password and changed it, but it didn't seem to do anything when logging back in.
