Replacement AC Adapter Not Working

Question

I own a Dell Inspiron 5584. Last week a dog chewed through the AC adapter, rendering it inoperable. Ordered a replacement adapter -- Dell product (not off brand), same wattage (45W), same specs all around. Plugged it in, received an error message that the adapter could not be recognized. Laptop works, but very slow, and does not charge the battery. Tried every other suggested fix from a different thread, aside from taking apart the adapter and re-soldering it, and nothing has worked. Do I need a higher wattage adapter?

Did you buy from Dell or a seller on a Marketplace like Amazon. Ebay, etc? Just because it is a genuine Dell product does not mean it will work on your model. Adapters are not interchangeable for all models but are specific for each model.

Does the LED light on the tip of the charger stay lit when plugged into the laptop?   .

No - it comes on for a few seconds when the plug is first inserted, then turns off.
