I have just gone from version A01 to A16 successfully. It was on a Linux/Kubuntu system, however the OS was not loaded, as FreeDos was on a USB. The only suggestion I can make is that is support assistant is giving problems, then can you try, upon boot, to simply go into a Dos/shell command shell ?
The Bios update does not need Support assistant to run, so try to circumnavigate that. It may work.

I too had this same problem and have tried multiple times to download and install this BIOS (Dell Inspiron 3442/3542/5748 System BIOS) update marked urgent. I've used Dell Update, the Support page here and Support Assist. All seem to start but get stuck or fail. I uninstalled Support Assist and reinstalled but still the installation will start and get stuck. Hoping that Dell corrects this or that someone will respond with a solution.

Create a bootable USB drive using “Rufus”
https://rufus.ie/
Copy the BIOS update to the bootable USB drive you just created..
Insert USB drive, power-on and start tapping the “ F12 “ key.
Boot from USB and run the BIOS update.
Best regards,
U2
NOTE:
I use a bootable DOS USB with around 20 or 25 BIOS's.
I have never had to load an OS to updated a BIOS.

Thankyou Jehoshua for your response. Somehow, I just re-attempted to launch the downloaded application file for the BIOS update (3442A16) and this time it worked and I did not get the error. This was after I had performed an unrelated update/download of Microsoft Office. So, it seems I am OK now after several hours of attempts. Perhaps the issue was indeed on my end. Thanks for your help.

Do you have Intel Virtualization Technology enabled in the BIOS? Try toggling that off before attempting the update.

I found out that the anti-virus was blocking it. disabled it and worked.
Anti-Tampering has detected a vulnerable driver. The driver was blocked. Driver path: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\Vostro_3900_3800_3902_A16\AFU3.07.01.Dell\amifldrv64.sys
