USB - Functional Tests - D0601

Inspiron 15 3515

Inspiron 15 3515

Hi, two of my USB ports have stopped working. A hardware test returns an error code - "USB - Functional Tests - D0601"

Can anyone throw some light as to what this code means?

If the ports aren't working at all -- with any device, it sounds like the USB controller has failed (the odds of two ports failing together independently are very slim).  If the other port is working, you can connect a USB hub to use it for more than one device.  Any other solution will require a system board replacement, which will run at least a couple of hundred dollars for the part, plus the labor charge if you have a shop replace it for you.

Thanks, that was my suspicion however it would of been nice to confirm it using the error code.

I can't see the point of issuing an error code with no way of referencing the detail.

I finally got round to further investigating my USB problem and found a burnt component - can anyone tell me if this is replaceable or is it terminal for the motherboard.

I must add that this is the second significant fault with my laptop, purchased new less than two years ago. I have a 35 year computing career behind me using predominantly IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads, all of which were retired rather than broken!

It probably can be replaced, if you have a shop that does board-level work.  It likely won't be any less expensive to have the burned component replaced than to replace the system board.
