Testing link aggregation with Isilon simulator ?

Hello

I wish I can test Isilon link aggregation with the simulator in lab but I fail to find if this is feasible/how to set this up. I don't think I ever configured link aggregation on a VM going to a virtual switch.

Thanks for feedback

Hello,

After going through the simulator a few more times, here is what I have for you:

It is theoretically possible to add another network interface to the Isilon Simulator (as in my example above); HOWEVER, this greatly reduces the stability of the simulator and is not something done easily. I was able to run for around 3 hours in this state before I lost one of my virtual nodes. This is because the simulator, as it is currently designed, is still semi-reliant on hardware based scripting that has been worked-around to achieve a virtual Isilon node, so it is not written to handle hardware changes.

Based on my testing, doing aggregation testing is not yet possible with the current Isilon Simulator.

Hello stephane.clavel,

Thank you for your question! To set up link aggregation in your virtual environment, you can refer to this VMWare Video Knowledge Base article:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalId=1004048

Hopefully this helps you get Link Aggregation testing under way with the Isilon Simulator!

thanks Katie

the KB describes link aggregation between ESX host and physical switches. My question is about link aggregation between a VM (virtual Isilon node) and virtual switch (distributed or standard)

Hello,

Are you getting any error messages in the Isilon WebUI when you try to add an aggregate interface to your network pool or is the option missing?

In my test, I am able to see the aggregate interfaces available when adding an interface to a network pool:

Can you let me know what you are seeing?

Hello Katie

Thanks again for your answer.

I think I have a more basic problem to solve first as I can only see int-a interface while the Isilon VM has 3 vNICs. No ext interface appear in node config wizard or in web GUI. But can see ext-1 interface in CLI

isilon2-1# isi networks list interfaces

Interface       Status      Membership                Addresses

--------------- ----------- ------------------------- ------------------------------

1:ext-1         up

1:int-a         up          int-a-subnet:int-a-poo... 192.168.154.114,192.168.154...

isilon2-1#

So now my questions are how to use the ext interface and how to bring 3rd interface up to create 2nd ext interface and create agg interface ?

thanks
