You mean that all the laptops will be using that slow, overheating P-M???? Pentium M is really overrated and it doesn't perform at the same level as the P4 mobile, even if it has a longer battery life.
Intel is phasing out the P4 for notebook use, so that leaves the Pentium-M, which will get the 64 bit extensions in late 2005 or early 2006 - so unless you go with AMD, or buy a system with a deskop P4, you've got about a year to wait.
A year? Surely not. I just built an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ desktop system three weeks ago because I figured it would be forever before DELL (Intel) would have a 64-bit desktop processor, and then a week or so later, wallaaaaah, here it is. I have no regrets building my own PC, but had I known, I'm sure I would have purchased a Dell.
I guess if I buy an AMD notebook, expect to see a Dell/Intel 64-bit solution shortly thereafter. 64-bit is the future of computing. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that all new computer purchases must be 64-bit capable, and that includes new laptops. I'm in no hurry though, I'll wait a little bit. Thanks!
If you read through the enthusiast sites, Intel's roadmap has the 64-bit extensions added to the Pentium-M in Q4, 2005 - allowing for slippage (the current Sonoma Pentium-M was about six months late) that would put it somewhere in Quarter 1 2006.
Perhaps Intel will be forced into 64 bit sooner by AMD, but they're still playing catch-up in the desktop 64 bit market, so that may not be possible.
