7558 touchpad app/driver

I have a 2 week old Inspiron 2 in 1 15 7558 i5 8G 500GHD. Running Windows 8.1 from factory.

The problem is I cannot control the touchpad. The biggest issue is tap to click. The entire pad including  the  buttons move the mouse and reacts to tap to click. This is very frustrating because when I touch the pad all kinds of crazy mouse clicks register or when I try to click a button the mouse cursor moves because the button is part of the touch pad.

All I want to do is disable tap to click. When I open control panel/mouse there is no touchpad tab nor controls for the touchpad. In device manager the driver for the touchpad/mouse shows up as a MS Mouse driver from 2008 which seems very wrong, especially since it came this way from the factory. I have checked the Dell driver site for a different driver both by model number and service tag, no touchpad driver or app. I have found synaptics, alps, ealn and Cyprus drivers on the web but none of them work.

Any fix for this? Seems like disabling touch to click should be a no brainer.

Thanks

Don

>>BTW your link goes to the 7568 and I have the 7558
oh,sorry...

I'm not a native speaker of English, and then apologize when there is a mistake.

Methods that are introduced in this page(www.ryukent.com/.../fixed-install-synaptics-touchpad-driver-windows-8-1), I think it's probably the same way as you did.

and, there is a description that I think it important.

My System do not Display Synaptics Tab in Control Panel :(
 But
 Run Program Files \ Synaptics \ SynTP \ SynTPEnh.exe

in this case, I think that even if there is no tab of synaptics to control panel, the installation has been successful.

Thus, if registry information on synaptics is recorded and customize it, I think it is possible to invalid tap to click.

The registry entry of my laptop with synaptics is in
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Synaptics

is there records of registry on synaptics in your pc?

At the same, either, but this is not a solution, is it possible to use the function of this software?
forum.tabletpcreview.com/.../twofingerscroll-v1-0-7-update-two-finger-scrolling-done-right-more.38405
I usually use the one of the functions that are provided by this software, -  when you are touching with one finger, will click when you tap on the other one finger -

by this function , I make it easier to click after moving mouse cursor with trackpad.
this software is for trackpad of synaptics ,so I hope this app help to use trackpad of your laptop.

delight1458,

Thanks so much for sticking with me through this. While none of the links you provided solved the problem, I have learned many things with your help and for that I say thank you.

I ended up thinking about from a different way, what about modifying the registry directly? With that, I found this site:

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-8-10-touchpad.html

Here I found the Windows touchpad settings (not synaptics) and found the entry that mentioned the AAPThreshold entry and set that value to 4 which tells windows 8/10 to disable tap to click on the touch pad regardless of what driver/manufacturer touch pad is in the machine and this has given me exactly what I wanted, a working touchpad with tap to click turned off. The buttons still work just fine.

Hope this helps someone else because now I can enjoy my new computer and have it work the way that it should, no help from Dell by the way.....

I just got off the phone with Dell support and they tell me that controlling or changing properties of the touchpad is not a 'feature' of this device. So you can't change scrolling, swiping, tap to click, cursor speed etc, etc, etc...... Unbelievable. Changing the properties of the touchpad is unsupported. I still can't believe they actually said that.....

Anyway, before I pawn this off on some other poor unsuspecting soul on ebay, does anyone know if I can swap the touchpad/palm rest from  a previous inspiron 15 with this one? I was looking at the 7458 which I can pick up for about $30. Any other ideas?

Thanks

So how about installing the driver by this way?

Thank you for you comments as I was trying to verify that it is a synaptics trackpad. I have found the video and driverguide website you link to above and tried these techniques with no success. I also went to synaptics site and downloaded the latest W8.1 driver, turned off driver signing so it would install, and that did not work either. The goofy thing about this is that I don't even get a touchpad tab in the control panel mouse app. Very frustrating.

BTW your link goes to the 7568 and I have the 7558. I have also tried the 7543 drivers and they don't work either.

thanks again

delight1458,

I should have written that YOUR post got me thinking about the registry...I was lucky enough to find the Windows 8/10 specific settings. :emotion-2:

Thanks again.

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/dell-touchpad-drivers/ I have this exact model and used Elan tech 15.3.0.14 drivers using the guide in the link above. The procedure must be followed EXACTLY! So far so good for me.

You guys deserve a medal. Thank you! =)

(Well, too late, my Windows 10 update took good care of it: almost all registry options are covered by windows' "mouse and touchpad config")

Thanks! Changing the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\

PrecisionTouchPad\Status value disabled the trackpad when my external mouse is plugged in on my Inspiron 7558.
