Adding a keyboard

I have an Inspiron 3800.  The keypad is driving me mad.  The letters either stick and double strike or I have to pound on a letter continuously and get nothing.  I spend most of my time backspacing.  I'm also using the 10-key alot and it's a hassle when you have to "type" numbers.  Therefore, I want to install an external keyboard.  The thing is....there's only one port for the keyboard and the mouse.  What are my options?   I have to use the mouse, can't just do without it!

I suggest you check out the link previously posted, as well as this list of keyboards posted on Ebay.

If you need assistance on how to install the new keyboard, you should contact dell and they will give you a link that explains how to install it in easy steps. It's considered a "customer installation", so even if you had a warranty going, Dell would ship you the keyboard and you'd have to install it yourself anyway.

Yes, I know I can get a replacement keyboard for my laptop, but I want to add an external keyboard.  I'd need an available port to plug it into.  The port for the keyboard I have and the mouse port is the same.  Is there some device out there that will allow me to plug both into one port or a different port that can be used with an adaptor?  I'm not very computer savvy, as you can probably see, and I know the answer might be no, but just checking all my bases.

Thanks for the previous info

Alright, I think I know what you need: a USB Hub.

Take a look at this little thing right here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817402014

This should fix your usb problem.

Just make sure that it's compatible with your usb plugs...

This uses USB 2.0 - if your keyboard is a USB 2.0 keyboard, then this little Hub should work like a charm.

Have fun.

Edit: I just assumed - since you did not mention it - that your keyboard and your mouse both used a USB port, and that your laptop only had one usb port. Now, if this is not the case, but you do have a USB  port empty, I suggest you plug your mouse at that port you spoke of, and buy a keyboard that uses USB ports instead (or vice versa). It will work just the same.
