First of all laptop batteries have limited life - i burn 1 each year. Getting 3 years of it is a pretty good deal.
If the laptop battery is worn to the thread and unused a long time, inserting it will not provide enough power for the laptop battery gauge chip to run on.
Hence - it can't report it's identity - and the laptop sees an unknown battery.
I don't think there's anything wrong - to it looks like worn batteries
