BIOS BUG REPORT: XPS 15 9550, CPU Speed capped after switching from battery to AC power

I noticed a very similar bug for a Dell Latitude posted on this forum and am shocked that Dell has not fixed these bios bugs.

I have a brand new XPS 15 9550 and I noticed that when you connect AC power after being on battery power, the CPU frequency gets capped at 1.69 GHz as opposed to the usual 3.5 GHz. The only way to fix this is to then reboot or sleep/resume the system. What is the best way to report this BIOS bug to Dell? There has to be some way to get Dell to fix the issue in a BIOS update.

I have found several other users also complaining of this same issue:

forum.notebookreview.com/.../help-needed-from-new-xps-owners-report-serious-bios-bug-to-dell.783715

I really hope Dell fixes this issue since it is unacceptable for Dell to sell such an expensive and premium machine with a glaring firmware bug that turns your i7 performance into a Pentium level of performance.

Get off these forums he says. Incredible. And I thought Apple fanatics were bad.

You have three of these machines and also tried a surface book, I guess? Well, congratulations, but as a student I do not have the ends to buy this much. I had to save up for months to buy a machine that costs this amount of money, and excuse me that I wanted it to be in fully working order.

The trackpad issue, while better with the lastest updates, are not fully resolved. All of the threads at Notebookreview? The horror stories about dell customer service? That all tells me enough, but I guess for you, having users fix the problems with a laptop instead of the manufacturer is how it should be.

And how do you explain all the quality control issues? Spacebars, screens, edges of the device not being flush, etc. Is that all normal too?

No worries, though.  I'll see myself out. UPS is picking mine up tuesday.

Like I said..  I agree with the problems with the CPU and DisplayAdapter.  The problems you note concerning spacebars, screens, edges not being flush well no they are not normal and I would be retuning that laptop for a replacement pronto.  The concern over software bugs will get resolved and if it's something that requires new hardware I believe Dell will stand behind their flagship XPS line and their early adopters Ike you and I.

There's nothing wrong with being upset after spending $2199, heck I returned the disaster $2699 Surface Book for more issues thEn you sight.  But if you can't wait for a BIOS update to at least fix the country/battery issue then return it.  I would have asked for a replacement just on your other points honestly, and in the three units I have  I'm not seeing one issue like you describe.  As far as Dell support is concerned I did engage them on one laptop and they bet over backwards taking care of me.

Good luck on your new choice of a laptop I certainly hope you find one that better suits your needs and doesn't have the issues the XPS has.

This response comes across much friendlier than your first one, so I'll engage.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but for me, it boils down to this: I, probably like yourself, need a laptop every single day. Dell offered to pick it up and repair it (not replace it), and while I appreciated that offer, they said it will take up to 4 weeks, which is just way too long.

I also asked about this BIOS update yesterday. They told me that while the ETA is indeed mid december, seeing how it's not released yet, it might be pushed back until january or february. Remember, that is what the dell employee/technician said.

If your three machines are fine, then that's great, and I am truly happy for you, because I can see that this machine has great potential. However, I can't shake the feeling that they have rushed it to the market to quickly.

My return window closes on 27 Dec and if this throttling issue is not fixed by the 23rd, it is being returned to Best Buy on the 24th of Dec-full refund wanted.  Dell has had more than enough time to test the BIOS fix and deploy it.

I also suffer from lockups, freezing screens, etc.

What really angers me is I upgraded this machine to Win 10 Pro-I'm betting I just lost my upgrade key...

For the record: I received today the "small" 45w power adapter. With that adapter my XPS (i7 skylake, bios 1.07, 16Gb, 1tb m2 ssd/AHCI with samsung driver) does nog cap max speed of the CPU.

Electricbear needs to stop commenting.  You do not buy a 2000 dollar computer to be told have patience while we make that 2000 dollar computer more then a paper weight.  It would be like buying a new fridge and being told just wait until we figure out how to get the fridge to cool.  We did not go to the dollar store to buy this computer.  If we did we would find its quality acceptable.  When issues last this long and still have not been fixed you have every right to complain.  Btw electricbear.. I have this time machine i will sell you for the cheap price of $5000.  It does not travel through time just yet but i am sure i will get it to.  Btw you only have a 30 day return policy so if i do not get it working after the 30 days you can go through my tech department to see if they can fix it.  Even though it does not have a fix yet.

More than a paper weight? Ummm. Does your computer not work at all? You're 100% sure you're not exaggerating a bit? As far as the capping issue, Restart the computer. It's a bug that has already been fixed just not deployed yet, they are likely testing to make sure it works OK. Welcome to the world of software. Find me a computer without bugs and I'll buy it for you (and I'm coming from a macbook that has bigger issues). To be fair, I'm a bit disappointed with the QC on this laptop, but if you have an issue, return it. The capping bug would be a huge deal if left unsolved, I think they dealt with it rather quickly to be honest. That being said, if it gets delayed for a few months... Feel free to complain.

I have the same issue, which isn't really surprising, and I started another email thread about it as I didn't see this one. I'm also waiting for this BIOS update, but honestly, it's a minor problem to me as suggested workarounds are super easy. It's annoying, I agree, but I'd never return this laptop just because of it :)

You're complaining about more than one issue here of which I am only seeing the CPU issue here on my XPS 15 and believe this will get fixed.  Since you're unhappy I would just return the thing and either buy something else or keep watching these forums and then buy a new one once fixed.

As far as your Windows 10 Pro license - I would try to argue the key with Microsoft once you get a new computer and explain you had to return the one that you used for the upgrade.

Been watching this thread for a while now ... amazing how many issues this laptop has and how slow Dell has been at resolving them. And they really were testing on prototypes?? The SR leadership at Dell have not done a great job creating the kind of team they are going to need to be successful in the long run. Another example of the kind of quality they are promoting ... They just posted a new thunderbolt driver for this laptop that just errors out when I try to run it. It was supposed to fix the screen coming up  at 5% brightness after sleeping. Hopefully the BIOS fix will be tested a little better. When I tried to call Dell to report the lady I talked to told me there we absolutely zero issues with the new Dell 9550 in her database.  the shame of this is ... Dell  has designed a truly amazing machine here and if it just worked it might be the best laptop I've ever used. One can only hope! Hopefully they decide world class service is important too!

Electriclabear.  I have purchase many computers that work very well right ofd the nat.  One of which is the hp spectre.  I had issues with my new surface book but after exchanges it works how it is meant to.  My hp pavilion is barely in one piece but worked great from the start till now.  I dont use it but i could if i wanted to.  It is no longer attached to its hinges has cut wires hanging out but works better then the 9550. I will start saving my used toilet paper and in you want to purchase it for 5 dollars a ounce to use some perfectly fre poop covered tp just let me know.
