Hi vgupta01,

The hard drive is getting detected in BIOS. Also, if the diagnostics have passed, I recommend that you try restoring the system back to factory settings. You may refer to the link http://dell.to/1bHqmtN for instructions.

Note: Please backup the data as this process leads to data loss.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

Turns out I found out the solution.

I want people who have had the same problem as me to try this out:

1) Use a Windows 7 Installation DVD, or from another Windows 7 computer, make a system repair disk(http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/create-a-system-repair-disc).

2) In the Win 7 DVD, click next and then repair your computer which is in bottom-left.

3) Click on Startup Recovery.

4) Wait for it to complete. Go to the next step after it finishes.

5) Done! Your computer should boot up normally after it finishes.

For people who are curious why this happened if their hard drive is detected in Bios, it is because the MBR (Master Boot Record) has been wiped out. It can be wiped out from viruses, installing other OS, etc. Startup Repair puts the MBR back.

Reseat (remove and reinstall) the drive.  If it's then still not detected, it's toast - replace it with a new one.

Hi rashid6003,

May I know the system model?

Refer the following link for hard drive troubleshooting:

http://dell.to/17lfPoq

Check if the hard drive is detected in BIOS. Restart the computer and tap F2 at Dell logo. Check if the hard drivce is detected.

Awaiting your response!

I did every thing as describe but there was no error message. Checked the BIOS, the fixed HDD is... ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB   (500 GB). You can forward any further information to  Email id removed per privacy policy>

The hard drive has failed.  To verify, press F12 at powerup, boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test on the drive.  You'll need a new, 2.5" 9.5 mm or slimmer SATA notebook drive.

I had exactly same same issue last week. The Hard drive is needed to be replaced.

I watched on youtube how to replace the hard drive and then went to best buy to get a new SSD, spent 30 mins to finish it and then another one hour to restore the system back in.

It is faster than ever.
