thanks for all your responses, im going to set about it right now,
from googleing the error codes i found on most sites that a programme called "regcure" is the best thing to use, but if i remember rightly from last time i cant get on to the net to download it, so i was wondering if i download it on to the laptop im using and then burn it on to a disc and choose to boot from a disc on the broken laptop will that work.

Apparently there are many possible causes for this error. You might want to look at the results from this Google search.

Boot into safe mode and see if there's any problems or programs you can uninstall it might be a hardware problem.

It would be a good idea to run an extended hardware diagnostic on the hard drive - F12 at powerup.

im doing the test now and its 78% done but and up till now has passed every thing, but now its doing a test on
Device: IDE Disc S/N = Y51F8536T
Test: Read Test
Test status: Testing 0006645623 of 0156301487
and every often i keep getting a pop up box saying
ERROR CODE 0F000:0244
"MSG: BLOCK 6651869"(for instance, there has been about 30 so far): "uncorrectable data error or media is write protected"
Does anyone know what all this means, as i really have not got a clue
