BSOD Driver_Power_State_Failure

I have a Dell XPS L502X. 18 months old, running windows 7 home premium.

It has started hanging when shutting down. It just sits there saying 'shuttiung down' for several minutes and then crashes with a Blue Screen of Death with the messaage Driver_Power_State_Failure but no other useful information.

I have tried many things including a factory reset but still this problem is appearing. Before I get desperate and reformat the hard drive completely and reinstall from the recovery discs, does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Dave Smith,

Since you are already done with the factory reset, I will suggest you to run the diagnostics on your system to check the hardware functionality. Below are the steps:

  • Restart your system and keep tapping “F12” as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight “Diagnostics” using up and down arrow keys and press enter.
  • The diagnostics should initiate.
  • It will show up color bars. Press “Y” key to continue.
  • It the diagnostics fail, it will give an error code.
  • If the diagnostics pass, it will ask you “Do you want to run the remaining memory test”. Press “N”.

Please let me know the error code, if you get any.

Please let me know the following:

  • How did you factory reset your system?
  • What all troubleshooting steps have you already performed?

Keep me posted. Please reply for further questions.

HI thanks for your interest.

I ran the Diagnostics as requested and no errors were found.

I did the factory reset by pressing the F8 key on boot up, selecting 'Repair your Computer' and followed the options which led to the factory reset from the hard drive.

I have tried various other things to try and isolate the problem.

  • If when you get to the windows login page where you input a password and use the red button (bottom right) to select shut down - it shuts down OK
  • If I simply log into windows and do nothing and then select shut down it shuts down OK.
  • If I log into windows and make just one change eg: change the size of the icons on the desktop and then select shut down. the problem is there. it just hangs with the words 'Shutting down' on the screen and the little circle going round and round. There is hard disc activity as the light is flashing.
  • Having made the small change (icon size) and selected shut down, If I wait for a couple of minutes while it hangs  and then press and hold the power button to force a power off, on restarting the laptop starts normally and the change has been remembered by windows.
  • If I log into windows and do nothing and select sleep. All is well.
  • If I log into windows and do nothing and select hibernate, the screen goes blank but the power button stays lit up and there is disk activity for about 10 minutes then it crashes with the Driver_Power_State_Failure message.
  • If I log into windows and make a small change and select sleep, the screen goes blank but the power button stays lit up and there is disk activity for about 10 minutes then it crashes with the Driver_Power_State_Failure message.
Do you have any further thoughts please?

Hi Dave Smith,

Thank you for the quick reply. I really appreciate your efforts. Since the diagnostics passed, I suggest to re install Windows 7 on your system. Below are the steps:

Note: - Please backup all your data as you will lose everything saved on your system. This includes all your pictures, music, documents etc. All the programs/software which you installed on the system will be deleted.  Also, if your system was shipped with MS office starter, the same cannot be re installed.

  • Insert the windows CD; Install DVD into the DVD drive, and then restart your computer. When the message ‘press any key to boot from the CD or DVD ...’ appears, press a key to continue booting to the DVD.
  • After Windows 7 setup loads, confirm the language, time, currency and keyboard method settings are correct then click 'Next'.
  • On the windows 7 Installation page, click 'Install Now'.
  • Review the terms and click 'I accept the license terms' to proceed.
  • On the 'Which type of installation do you want?' Window, click Custom (advanced).
  • On the 'Where do you want to install Windows' window, click on "Drive options" (Advanced).
  • Highlight each partition and click on "Delete". Once all the partitions are deleted, select this unallocated space and click 'Next'.

Note: Your computer will restart several times during installation.

  • The next couple of screens allow you to personalize and customize Windows 7.
  • Once you see the desktop, you are ready to move on to the next step.

Below is the link for the operating system re installation:-

Once the driver is saved on the desktop, click on “Run as administrator” and follow the on screen instructions. Please follow these steps to install each driver listed below.

 1.    Chipset: Please install the Chipset drivers in the same sequence mentioned below:-

 2.    Video driver: Please follow the steps to install the video driver depending on the video card your system has:

HI Vikram,

the laptop did not come with a Windows installation DVD just  a 'Drivers and Utilities' DVD. I have created Recovery DVDs from Dell's DataSafe backup programme which is installed. I have already backed up all my data so should I just reinstall all the drivers onto the laptop as it is or 'Recover back to the factory state and then install the drivers 1 by 1?

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thank you for sending your system's service tag. You can request the re installation disk by contacting the technical support in your region from the below link:

http://dell.to/PnSWZR

However, I will suggest you to re image your system using recovery disks created from Dell data safe local backup. Below are the steps along with the screen shot:

Note: All the data on your system will be deleted including pictures, music, documents etc.

  •  Insert the Recovery DVD; Install DVD into the DVD drive.
  • Restart your system and keep tapping "F12" as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive" using up and down arrow keys and press enter.

  • Welcome screen appears.
  • Select "Continue with your System Recovery Disk" and click "Next".

  • Select "Factory Recovery"and click on "Next".

  • Select "Yes, continue" and click on "Next".

  • "Restore my Computer" screen appears.

  • Click "Restart, once the restoration completes.

Follow the on screen instructions and enter any information required at the initial setup.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Ok Vikram we seem to be going round in circles here. As I stated in my original post I had already done a factory reset without any success. I was hoping to find a way to solve this without going through that again. I will try and reinstall all the drivers manually and see how I get on.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

I really appreciate your patience and your efforts. There is a possibility that the image is corrupted on your system. I would suggest you to contact the technical support in your region to get the re installation disk so that we can re image the system by deleting the partitions.

Please reply for any questions.

Well I did reinstall back to the factory state from my recover DVD. The same thing happened. I tried to install the new drivers manually but both the 'Management Engine Interface', wireless  and video drivers failed to install.

I have spent 50 minutes on the phone to my regional centre who are now charging me money for DVDs with Windows on it which I need as a result of a corrupted image which Dell installed.

I shall have to wait a few days now for the DVD to arrive.

Thansk for you rhelp earlier but a couple of your links do not work

Realtek RTL8111EL (Ethernet driver): http://dell.to/P9MwvL

Realtek audio driver: http://dell.to/P9MTqj

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for the non working links. Please keep me posted once you get the DVD. I will help you with the fresh links.

Morning Vikram.

The reinstallation DVD arrived. I reformatted the hard drive and installed windows as a fresh copy. I then installed the drivers in the order you suggested (I found the ones which had the broken links on the Dell support pages) and then having created a restore point I updated windows to bring all its components up to date. All is now working as it should. I now have a clean, fast and functioning laptop again.

In conclusion I am not particularly happy that Dell forced me to pay for the installation disc when there was apparently a fault with the original built in recovery files supplied with the laptop but I do appreciate and thank you for your efforts and in particualr the list of drivers and installation order. That saved me a lot of time and research when reinstalling windows.

Thanks

Dave
