Pick up a Kensington MicroSaver lock from Dells website....it'll stop an opportunist theif but likely not someone who purposely goes to steal your notebook!

It locks in the small oblong slots on the sides of your Inspiron....

nry

Inspiron 8100, P3-M 1Ghz, 128MB Dell RAM 128MB Crucial, 20GB ATA-100 HD, Win 2000, 8xDVD, 15.1" SXGA display, 2nd battery, 32MB GeForce2 Go, 56k Modem/LAN....V sweet!

I foolishly bought a Targus Defcon CL laptop cable lock before looking at my laptop to see how it attached.

I have a Dell Insprion 8200.

The fingers of the metal lock slip through a oblong hole in the plastic sidewall of the case and then expand. The plastic on the sides of the hole does not seem to be reinforced by metal.

It seems like a trivial exercise for someone to rip the lock out as only thin plastic retains the fingers of the lock  inside the laptop case. I was expecting a more secure attachment point and that the potential thief would have to use at least bolt cutters to cut the cable or do serious damage to the case.  It looks like they can rip it out and just leave a slightly larger hole in the side of the case.

Is this how all laptops are designed?  Is there a better system that does not involve also buy a a docking station?
