Can't connect to router!!!!
The machine is an Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7. I can connect to the wireless networks at the three clinics where I work but can't connect to my son's router (where I live).
My son's two laptops have no problem connecting, though the connection is pretty slow.
I've run the troubleshooter on my machine a few times. Recently it says that my computer "Does not have a valid IP configuration". And, of course, it suggests I go online to search for solutions. (Catch 22!) Right now I'm using my son's laptop to access the internet and talk to you.
Any suggestions, oh wise ones?

Hi Doc1947,
Welcome to the Community. Click on start, control panel, network and sharing center, manage wireless networks, change adapter settings ( right side ) right click on the Wireless Network Connection and click on properties, Under the network tab, click on Internet Protocol Version 6 ( TCP/IPv6 ) and click on properties, and check the box that says Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically, and click ok.
Apart for this I would also update the wireless card driver, log on to support.dell.com, click on home users, click on drivers and downloads, enter your service tag, and download and install the wireless card driver.
Hope this helps
Thank you
Royan

doc1947,
Try...
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
Start, control panel, networking and sharing center, click on your connection, properties
Look for TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6, then click on properties. Make your settings match mine.
Start, control panel, device manager, network your network adapter, advanced. look for antenna diversity. if your model has antenna diversity, then change it from auto to aux, then restart your computer.

Royan and Rick, much thanks for your suggestions. The boxes were already checked re: obtaining DNS server and IP address. Downloading the new wireless card seems to have done the trick. I had asked several people previously, including one professional, and you folks came up with the answer.
Much obliged!

PS: I couldn't find the link to antenna diversity, Rick.

doc1947,
Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. Some wireless adapters have this and some don't We have found that the adapters with Antenna Diversity, changing it from Auto to Aux helps the adapter to connect to networks.
Take care,
Rick
