Card reader not working on studio laptop

I have a Studio 1535 laptop with a camera card reader built in, but when I insert a memory card in the slot it doesn't show up at all.

The safely remove hardware icon appears in the tray at the bottom of the desktop and the memory card is listed as a removable device there, but it doesn't show up anywhere else in windows explorer or my computer and I can't access it to copy files, etc.

When I look at the drives listed in disk management it shows up there as a removable disk.

Can anyone please advise if this might be a hardware fault or if there is some setting or software that needs to be installed for the card reader to work correctly? What are the drivers that it needs? I reformatted the computer a while back and I may have not installed all the device drivers, although there are no warnings in device manager about non-functioning hardware.

Thanks for any advice.

In Disk Management, you said it shows up as a removable disk. Does it have a drive letter? If not, can you right-click and Change Drive Letter?

Thanks,

No, it doesn't have a drive letter and it doesn't allow changes to a drive letter in disk management. It doesn't show up at all in windows explorer.

It does offer to format the drive if I right click on it but if I say yes, an error message comes up saying that there is a problem and that I need to shut down the computer and try it again, but it never resolves the problem.
