This is an article from CNET on best practices for cleaning monitors that I like.
The big thing is not to spray any liquids directly on the display. Use a soft lint free cloth and gently wipe the screen. If you have smudges, use mild soapy water and dip your cloth into the water, wring it out and wipe down the display, be careful to remove any soap residue. Then go over the display again with a dry cloth to remove any streaking.
