If you have done everything else to correct overheating, then I would use a cooler as a last resort. This assumes that you are not purposely overclocking your processor.
All laptops are prone to overheating. Because of there size and shape, it is difficult to get enough air thru them for cooling. If you put your hand at the back edge of your laptop, you will feel air blowing out of a vent. Get canned air and frequently blow a few blasts of air into this vent.
Also check the operation of your cooling fans.
There are ways to monitor you fans and the temp of your laptop. At the bottom of this page, search for these solutions using the search words: fan temperature software.
Also set you laptop so the it goes into suspend mode when you close the lid. This gives the computer a rest and cools it off. When you open the lid, you do not have to wait for boot up.
