Cursor disappearing automatically and regularly interrupting typing

I recently purchased a del xps 15z and I love it except for one thing. As i'm typing text or clicking on items, the cursor just disappears and I cannot continue typing. This happens mid sentence often and is very annoying as I have to keep clicking back on the spot I need to continue typing and the cursor comes back. This is happening anywhere on the computer be it the internet, word, excel, documents etc. Is this is a software or hardware related problem?

It has happened five times whilst just typing this sentence.

The same exact thing is happening to me.

I read in another thread, someone uninstalled Dell Stage and fix(disappeared)ed it, however, I already uninstalle(disappeared)d it when I first got the computer a coupl(disappeared)e months b(disappeared)ack.  So that won't work for me.

I spent a half hour on the phone with support.  They thought it had to do with trackpad sensitivity issues they had, but I think that is a totally separate issue.  I'm typing right now with an external keyboard and it happens just the same, my hands are nowhere near the trackpad.  The trackpad is also totally disabled now after what the tech did and it still happens.

Please someone, I like this laptop, I really don't want to trade it for another.  This seems like a simple issue, any Dell geniuses out there?

(disappeared) Just when I thought I was doing pretty good =)

Thank you so much Dan37 for speaking up and saying it's happening to you - I have tried all the solutions others have written including disabling the Dell Track Pad but like you still happening. Very annoying. I love my Dell XPS 15Z - it's brand new but this issue has been happening since I purchased it nd first started it up. If you find any solutions please do let me know here. Much appreciated.

I am having the same problem guys.  I tried updating the Cypress driver, which Dell had claimed fixes the problem, but to no avail.

This mouse pad jumps around like nobody's business.   And, the gestures stink.   Great laptop, horrible trackpad.

If I would have known about the trackpad, there is no way I ever would have purchased this.  Don't know what to do now...

If you find out anything, please let me know as well!

Thanks!

You could try turning off the Hide cursor while typing and or disconnect or disable the trackpad.

I've tried this and it does not fix it.  Thanks for the suggestions though, I'm willing to try just about anything at this point.

I thought I was the only one with this issue.    I don't use a touchpad, but use a mouse.   Is there a way to turn the touch pad off?

I have only had his less than a week.  It's a 14 inch.

Well MSRussell, there are two problems with this thing and only one of them has to do with the trackpad (Although Dell doesn't seem to acknowledge this)

There are settings to disable the trackpad when using an external mouse ( right click trackpad icon in system tray -> TrackPad Properties -> Tab: Cypress TrackPad -> Link: Click to Change Cypress TrackPad Settings -> Tab: Device Select -> Checkbox: Disable TrackPad when external USB mouse is present )

If your issue is just random clicks happening on the screen, highlighting and overwriting of text...disabling the trackpad or reducing its sensitivity will help.

If your issue is as we described in this thread: Complete deactivation of your active window while typing.  I'm afraid you're in limbo with us.

Thought I'd jump on the bandwagon here too. Same problem, same story. Have latest driver, everything disabled but I don't use an external mouse so that fix won't work for me. I'm getting my master's degree and this is incredibly annoying as I am typing papers constantly and fighting the cursor constantly. About to send this thing back but I love it! I've only had it two weeks.

Hi all and Dan,

I'm still suffering from this issue - I must say disabling the trackpad when I have a usb mouse plugged in has helped a little, but it is such an erratic problem and still occurs regardless of the mouse being plugged in. My thought is that it is a manufacturing fault and seems to be occuring to multiple units including my work colleague's XPS 15z who bought his at the same time as me. I have the dell support link below. May I suggest we all contact Dell today/this week and complain and hopefully they will see its a common issue.

You will need your service tag when you ring Dell, the service tag should be underneath the laptop and it will be a 5 digit number (ie <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>)

supportapj.dell.com/.../byphone

On this link ring the top number for Home user support and if they cant help then ring the next number XPS hardware support.

Also if they need to send a tech out, arrange them to come to your office or home.

Good luck - I'll keep you posted on my success (or not)

You are right about the overwriting text.....aaarrrggghhh.    You have fixed my problem, I believe.   I have emailed people, no problem, typed as fast as I could, no problem there either.    You have made me a very happy typer.   I hope everyone else bugs Dell for a solution to their problem...no excuse for it.   I was lucky enough to want a 14" for travelling purposes

SOLUTION FOUND FOR CURSOR DISAPPEARING WHILE TYPING - DELL XPS

Hello everyone,

I am truly hoping this will help, if not all of you, at least some. And if you can, please pass this on so we can reach as many people as we can and help them all too.

I was going through the same problem. I contacted the company I purchased my Dell from, Better Choice Online through Amazon, and these guys are real problem solvers. They sent me a list of options for fixing the problem.

The one that worked for me was option # 3. I downloaded the recommended software, it is free, ran it and restarted the computer. It did not work on the first restart. So, I restarted the computer again and THE PROBLEM WAS GONE!!! It's been almost a week and still completely gone.

Here's what they emailed me:

1) Diable the trackpad for a bit and see if it goes away (usually the function button and the corresponding F key up top - should look like a trackpad).  You may be inadvertently activating a gesture on the pad with the heel of your thumb, or the trackpad has gone wonky.

2) It could also be something in the touchscreen activating at random, although usually the mouse cursor will drift around when that happens.  You can usually disable a touch screen by disabling the device in your Device Manager.  Better connect a mouse while you do that just in case you disable both.  This wil rule out hardware.

3) We've seen random applications steal focus away from a task in the foreground as well, or it could even be malware stealing the focus of your application to a background task.  Some TPLink application (wifi cards, etc.) have been known to do that. Get a free copy of MalwareBytes and run a scan, then restart.  If it is some kind of malware this application should get rid of it.

4) The other alternative is to factory restore the machine.  Just power it off using a long press of the power button twice in a row then chose advanced trouble shooting.  This will ERASE ALL DATA unless you are not careful.

I just need to acknowledge Josh and Nate at Better Choice Online. Amazing tech support! You guys have no idea the problem you have solved for so many of us.

Thank you so much!

Karin.
