Cypress Touchpad driver XPS 15z Windows 8 (Workaround Solution)

Where is the Windows 8 Cypress TrackPad Driver for the XPS 15z?

Problem: Before upgrading to Windows 8 the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant would of forced you to removed the Cypress TrackPad Software and Driver before upgrading. After upgrading your XPS 15z to Windows 8, you will then notice that there is no Cypress TrackPad Driver on the Dell Drivers and Downloads Site for the XPS 15z under the Windows 8 section. Instead there is only a Windows 7 Driver.

Dell have quietly marked the A06 2.3.6.26 Version of the Cypress TrackPad driver as Windows 8 compatible but trying to install the A06 Cypress TrackPad Driver normally will give you a incompatibility error like the one below, this is due to the Setup.exe file. A workaround to solve this problem is to perform a manual install of the Cypress TrackPad driver by following the instructions in the answer thread below (see link

This is what will be displayed if you try to install the A06 Cypress TrackPad Driver on the XPS 15z through its normal Setup.exe. The error is slightly misleading as the driver itself works under Windows 8, but for whatever reason Windows 8 identifies the software installer as incompatible and blocks the installation.

To get around this, you can bypass the normal Setup Executable and install the driver and software manually:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19473174/20216716.aspx#20216716

Note: The Windows 7 Driver is listed Windows 8 compatible you can confirm this by checking the driver details and clicking the compatibility tab. The issue being Windows 8 will block the normal Cypress Setup.exe from running due to its software incompatibility checks, this is slightly misleading as the driver itself is completely functional under Windows 8. This issue has been reported to Dell and hopefully will be corrected soon.

If this solution worked for other XPS 15z owners let me know by replying to the thread! If you have any problems or questions feel free to respond to the thread.

Thank you James2k,

It worked - I followed your instructions and your work-around seemed to have worked.

I just updated to Windows 8 and my XPS 15z was utterly unusable before doing this fix.

Before this fix, I could not type so much as a single sentence without the cursor jumping around all over the place: it was moving up and down and back and forth and even between windows, just trying to type a sentence.

Because of this model's chronic, repeated Cypress trackpad problems, this otherwise great computer has been a recurring nightmare since I bought it a year ago.

And yet, despite equally chronic poor customer service (read: painfully delayed, excruciatingly slow, given the essential nature of the trouble component) over the trackpad issues since day 1, I was nevertheless stunned to find that no driver was developed to ensure that this model functions in Windows 8. Why on earth wasn't a trackpad driver released with all of the others on Oct. 26th??

The 'native' trackpad - which is what we get after upgrading to Windows 8 - is worse than the Cypress ever was.

I bought this premium model in order to ensure solid quality for a heavily-used work computer, as I had enjoyed with my previous XPS. But after a year of trouble with the Cypress trackpad, this may be my last Dell - which would be really frustrating, since over 15 years the only problem I have ever had with Dells is the one with this Cypress trackpad - is it really so difficult to get this essential component right?

Anyway, thanks again James2k - it's a relief to have my computer functioning again.

No problem. What seems to have happened was an oversight. I to was slightly puzzled as to why there was no Windows 8 driver. Turns out the A06 driver is listed as compatible if you look at the driver details. Dell seem to think so, problem is the actual Cypress Setup installer is blocked by Windows 8's software incompatibility checks. It seems an oversight on Dell's part for not spotting it. I saw several forum posts with Dell forum mods telling users to install the said A06 driver but no one seemed to realise that the Setup.exe was getting blocked. Till now anyway.

I believe Dell are working on an updated driver, presumably with a fixed Cypress Setup.exe so Windows 8 won't block it and the driver can be installed through normal means.

For what it's worth, according to my Windows 8 Update Assistant results, the following is listed as Not Compatible:

Cypress TrackPad

Cypress Semiconductor, Inc., Version 2.3.6.26

And this is listed as Compatible:

Cypress TrackPad

Cypress Semiconductor, Inc.

I have copied these two entries here in their entirety, which is to say that on the Compatible list, Cypress TrackPad / Cypress Semiconductor, Inc. is listed without any version whatsoever. And the version listed on the Uncompatible list - 2.3.6.26 - is the very one we now, thanks to your fix, have installed.

Have you tried installing version 2.5.0.76 A00 for the XPS 13 L322X on your XPS 15z?

Just tried installing the 2.5.0.76 drivers on my 15z. The trackpad was unresponsive afterwards. I've reverted back to the Win7 drivers for now.

For information,

I tried the touchpad driver 2.5.1.27 for the L322z laptop released 12-3-12.

Pluses

It installed properly (as always, uninstall existing touchpad driver before installing a new one)

The interface has a nice, new look with a menu box.

It disables with a Bluetooth mouse properly. (Well, at least I know that the system tray icon has a red X with a BT mouse, and none without a BT mouse)

It uninstalls properly.

Minuses - THE TOUCHPAD AND BUTTONS ARE ALWAYS DEAD.

The control panel shows the touchpad 'enabled', meaning no yellow boxes or such showing driver incompatibility.

If anyone dares try, let me know if you have better results. (Just make sure you have a separate mouse handy!)

Since it seems to uninstall successfully, I did not cause any other problems than a few minutes lost in the attempt. Of course, then I followed the 'workaround' install process for the older 15z driver and was back where I started.

Hi all, I have the same problem here and I tried to test various driver to find what is suitable with my Dell XPS 15z. Finally, I found it and want to share with you. The file in a link below is a part of cypress driver for win 8 of Lenovo but it work perfectly on my XPS 15z. This is file for your issue:  www.mediafire.com

I tried the Lenovo driver and gestures (e.g., two-finger scroll and zoom) still don't work.

Glad it worked for you! The installer (.exe) is just a nice front end for installing the driver really. The actual .msi, .bat and .inf files highlighted in the workaround are the raw files you need to get the Cypress driver working.
