D600 Port Replicator Problems

They say it takes a brave man to recognise his mistakes and an even braver one to admit to them, well in my opinion that makes the good folks at Dell complete cowards.

There is clearly a major problem with the USB port replicators on the D600 APR, they don't work - period.

Come on Dell hold your hands up and do 2 things, otherwise my D600 will be coming stright back to you and my custom will be going elsewhere.

(1) Admit to the problem

(2) Tell us how to solve it in a clear step by step fashion, not by directing us to various threads posted by other users who have the same problem and may have solved it by a combination of good luck and black magic.

Completely,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
If you are having problems with your USB devices, the first thing you should try is to use a "Self Powered USB hub". Your USB devices may require more power then the D/Port replicator can provide.

Karell is aware of the problems and will provide you with no viable solutions.  Do a search on the Inspiron forums (port replicators) for an abundant amount of info on this subject.

You won't like what you find...

I have tried 3 different powered USB hubs, to no avail (See previous posts about my configuration)

I have spoken to Dell support several times previously, and followed their advice on OS patches, driver updates, USB hubs, travel-cables and many other attempts to solve this problem.  The only option they give me now, is to replace my Axim X5 2003 with an older model running Pocket PC 2002.  This is not acceptable!

It is time for you to contact your supervisors to give us all a better solution, such as replacement with an X3, on-site service, etc.  I work for a large company and have already influenced 5 of my coworkers to avoid the Dell Pocket PC's as a result of this problem.  Most have bought HP or Toshibas with NONE of these problems, yet they use the same Dell D600 laptop my company issues to us.  I would much rather tell them how great a deal I got on my Axim rather than embarrassedly explain how I got stuck with such a lemon!

Please give us a workable solution to this problem.  I have read posts and received sympathetic emails from dozens of people with identical symptoms.  A few are even discussing a litigious solution, but I naively keep holding out hope that Dell will step forward and resolve their technical problems or replace the equipment.

Please pass-on the comments from this and other messages in this thread so the issue can get the attention it is due!

Thank you,

Lance

I have a Toshiba e550g (made by Audiovox, same as Meistro), running PPC2002.  I have the same issues.  BS.

When I get a chance, I am going to install this setup on a desktop running XP, with and without  USB 1.0 and USB 2.0 hubs in the loop.  That should narrow it down to the hardware.  If I can duplicate the issue, it will prove that it's not Dell Notebook-specific.  Other people have stated that other manf.'s have this problem, as well.

I will also repeat this on the 600m, without the APR.

If you have a USB 2.0, powered hub, try to duplicate this (without the port replicator) on your own, and post your results here.  I have to go out and buy one.

If it works w/ the USB 2.0 hub for a couple of days, it's definately the APR/Laptop hardware at fault.

Good luck.

I have this problem also on a M60- this is the precision workstation laptop- overgrown lattitude.

It only happens in the port replicator, not standalone.

I have tried to us a USB hub to resolve problem and that does not fix it.

In my situation when the laptop boots in the replicator the PDA (in my case a Hitachi G1000) is seen and Activesync works.  But, if I take the PDA out and put it back, I get the USB device not recogniized error etc.  Please note that when the sync works you see a windows CE device in the device manager and when it does not there is a general usb device that is read as unknown.

I am vitrually sure this is a hardware/port replicator issue and have had mine switched out to no sucess.  My lab owns 30 Dells and I am going to raise this issue as far up the food chain as possible.

I am glad to see that right after I make my irate post- see above- Dell has finally admitted the problem and has a solution.  I am testing this right now.  It has found the device three times in a row, which is a record.  I will continue to test today and post the results.  I hope this is the true solution.

Is the solution to turn off the USB 2.0 driver?

That solution is correct.  I have just verified this over the past six hours.

Dictated with Dragon Naturally Speaking 7.3 and may not be fully corrected...

Not really a solution...

Ever try to transfer a large file at USB 1.1 (via external hard drive, etc.)???

Indeed not really a solution. This AM after going home and running the laptop out of the docking station last night, the connection (activesync) would not work in the station.  To get it to work I had to:

1.  delete the hardware profile for docking (still no activesync activity)

2.  delete the USB 2.0 connection that then reappeared in device manager (activesync beeped but no connection...)

3.  connect by IR and get a good sync

4.  connect by USB and get a good sync

Not exactly optimal.  I hope they come up with a stable driver soon.  I am glad I did not delete the activesync profile.

I think I will continue noting this saga here until they fix the problem.

I am having the same issue with the D600 and T-Mobile PPC and Port replicator.  I tried connecting w/out the APR and stil did not work.  When uninstalling the USB 2.0 enhanced in the device manager, is that all I need to unintsall?  Can someone walk through the exact process....  Thanks!

UPDATE:  I uninstalled the USB 2.0 Enhanced hub and still not working.  I do have a powered USB 2.o Hub at home, so will try it after work.  But has anyojne had a successfull powered hub sync?

In addition.  Since I have yet to make a ActiveSync, can I still connect via InfraRed?  I am able to communicate with my D600 and PPC, but obviusoly the Active Sync is what is needed in the end, etc..

UPDATE:  Powered USB hub did not work with the port replicator, same issue as before.  My next test will be using the powered USB hub directly to a USB port on the D600.

I have the same problem with a Palm Tungsten T3. I down loaded and installed the latest ( 4/30/04 A11) FlashBIOS update which said it was addressed USB problems. Initially it does recognize the Palm then it goes to a unknown device message then says device is malfunctioning. The T3 will sync when connected directly to the D600. My wife's Zire 71 will sync thru the port replicater.

I have not tried the self powered hub yet, but am disappointed at the performance of the hub. We are a 100% Dell customer worldwide and I feel I have second tier equipment.

OS: Win XP Pro;           Computer: Dell Latitude D600;     Handheld:  Palm Tungsten T3

Problem: Will not hot sync.
