Dell Inspiron 1520 screen brightness adjustment not working

When I try to adjust the screen brightness by holding the Fn key and pressing the up/down arrows nothing happens. I last found it to be working several months ago. I downloaded Dell Quickset and updated BIOS today but this does not resolve the problem. Any constructive suggestions appreciated.

I was having the same problem on my Dell Latitude E5410. It started today. I went and uninstalled the driver and when i scanned for changes, computer asked to restart. Since then my resolution has changed (become bigger), and the graphics card is showing as Standard VGA graphics adapter, and also, i'm not being able to increase the brightness. So, no solution for this model. Any suggestions please?

This worked for me:

Remove LogMeIn and its mirror driver in devices. Also remove the DPMS monitor. Don't worry, windows will install a default monitor.

This is super helpful. It works like a charm. Just uninstalled the graphic drivers and scanned them again. Thank you so much!

I tried this earlier also but it didn't work. Now, after 2-3 days, this trick (of uninstall and scan for changes) worked (to my surprise). Although, now, the brightness is 100%. Earlier it was 0%. So eyes are straining either ways.     : (

My Dell Inspiron 1525 is a 2009 model. It has had no problems like this but my younger bro installed Windows 8 on it (it originally had Vista, then W.7) and now after around a month, firstly my battery stopped charging despite being plugged in, and now, this brightness issue.
