dell Inspiron n5010 won't boot

I am having problems with my out of warranty dell n5010  hope some one can help. when i try to start the computer the black screen comes up and says

REBOOT and SELECT proper Boot device or insert Boot media in selected boot device and press a key.

I did find the boot device was set to USB so I switched back to hard drive and restarted but error still pops up. I also ran the diagnostic test and no errors came up.

also has an error PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: exiting PXE ROM

Is my computer toast? hope someone can help

It just isn't any different with any other brand - there are just three manufacturers that make notebook drives -- and they're the same whether they go into a Dell, or an HP -- or a Mac.

jstires74, I am sorry to hear of your problems with Dell laptops. As a volunteer on forums for all three major PC brands I can confirm that all use the same manufacturers for their notebook drives. The best you can do is to buy the best warranty offered, keep good backups, do your routine maintenance, and be aware of the lifespan. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop that will turn 10 years old in 2013. It is still in good working condition, although slow because it is a Pentium 4.  I am replying to you on an Inspiron E1705 that is almost 7 years old. My very first Inspiron 5000e made it for 6 years before the HDD failed. I don't know if you are unlucky or if I am lucky, but I wouldn't shop based on just HDD lifespan.

Hi dilankeshawa,

Please elaborate the issue you are facing with the system. You may run hardware diagnostics on the system to check for hardware functionality, by following the steps below:

  • Reboot and press to enter the Boot Menu
  • When the boot device list appears, highlight ‘Diagnostics’ and press
  • The computer begins to run the ‘Pre-boot System Assessment’, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
  • In case any hardware component is bad, you will get a corresponding error.

Please share the system model and the operating system you are using.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist you.

I just went about ordering the restore disk because the customer misplaced it and that that fixed the issue

I ran hardware diagnostics and it didn't find anything wrong, so my alternative was to restore. Talked with dell support and they suggested the same

Hi dilankeshawa,

You may reset BIOS to defaults. Please follow the steps below:

  • Power on the system and tap at the ‘Dell’ logo
  • Press on the ‘System Setup Utility’ screen and then press ‘Enter’
  • Press to ‘Save Changes and Exit’ and press ‘Enter’ again

You may change the BIOS settings. Please ensure hard drive is set as ‘First Boot Priority’ under ‘Boot’ tab in BIOS.

Hi dilankeshawa,

Thank you for the information. I regret for the inconvenience. Have you purchased the new hard drive from Dell?

Inspiron N5110 does not support iSRT, there is no need to install it.

You may install the latest quickset application to make the top three buttons working. Please refer to the link: http://dell.to/16y9JPU.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further assistance.
