Have just spotted this post at Notebook Review regarding the Dell L702x RAM Slots issue.

This is wrong info to customers. I have 2  8GB DDR3 SODIMMS working in the non-3D version just fine.  I wish you would have tried this before giving customers the wrong info.  The Intel spec for this chipset says 16GB max, there is no mention in the spec for if the system has 2 or 4 slots.  I don't know if 4 8GB sticks would work but I have 16GB  Ram working just fine in the system with only 2 slots.  I got the memory from FRYs before Black Friday so missed the deals but it is worth it for me.  PATRIOT brand.

I really appreciate those facts rgros1998.   I think i will go visit the Fry's store close to me and ask them to try it onsite.

I am really disappointed in the Dell sales & support for misleading customers.

Much thanks!

I mentioned before, but I can also confirm again that we are successfully using 2 x 8 gig ram in the non-3D version. Now I don't know what the official specs are of the motherboard, as there seems to be conflicting information flying around there, but I thought that the motherboard handles 32gig max.

I think this is a totally complete screwup on Dell's behalf, and the disabling 2 of the slots "to save money" on their highest spec machine (excluding alienware) is a massive mistake. On top of that, having their technicians not really understanding their products has made this a nightmare for many customers. If anyone could be bothered reporting it, I think the ACCC in Australia would be really interested in hearing about this.

Oh also, Dell didn't charge us for the extra 2 x 8gig ram modules that they sent out. We accepted that as their apology for screwing us about. However it doesn't sound like Dell have been quite as helpful to others.

dacsmc - i would GUESS 16GB.  I have also successfull installed 2x8GB DIMMs in the non-3D version.  I just went to a store and bought it myself without dragging Dell into it.

Terry it sounds as if you know your stuff! So I have a question; How much RAM can the non 3D system take ? Speeking ofcourse of the XPS L702X.

Thanks

Thank you I was just told by Dell tech  it only held 8GB I hadn’t been on the form lately and went ahead and bought 2 4GB sims to bring it up to 16GB and found out I only have two slots. Now I am returning them. I’ll just order two 8’s off the net knowing now it will hold 16. It’s too bad we have to tell each other these things and can’t get the correct information from Dell after spending over $2500.00 for a laptop!!

Any suggestions on buying the sims?

Thanks

Dale

Yeah, same happened to me.  I was quite surprised that I only had 2 slots when I opened her up.

I went to Fry's and got 2x8GB Cosair PC3-10700 DDR3 (667MHz) ...about $100.  I didn't go for the top of the range.  I sat in their parking lot to install the memory to make sure it works.

Hope that helps.

Here's my question. I have the XPS 17 L702X non 3D with 3 GB of video ram, two memory slot. Can the motherboard from the 3D with 4 memory slot interchange. Would all the connections, ie, LCD cable, backlighted keyboard etc. fit?

Has any tried 4 x 8GB modules in L702X with 4 slots ? I got one with 3D, 3GB Video card and 4 slots with 4 x 4GB sticks and I would like to upgrade it to 32GB but I don't want to hassle with purchasing and returning if its not going to work.

from what i've read it will work, BUT you must be running windows7 Pro or ultimate, but check to confirm

I got the L702X with i7-2630QM thats what I am unsure if it supports over 16GB memory. OS is not a problem as I run WIndows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise which supports upto 2TB memory. In all the forums I read, people reporting success with i7-2720QM or higher processors but no one has commented on i7-2630QM processor.

I have L702X i7-2670QM with 3D Version and I got two dimm sockets.Strangely when I used Dell on line tools with service tag  ,Summary tell me Original Configuration - Memory : 12.288MB (3X4.096) 1.333MHZ DD

Other when I use Intel tools to idenftiy my processor the clock rate is measured at 2,79 Ghz at least 2;20 Ghz expected

So I do not understand anything and I do not know what to do to clear up this problème.si Terry.B always speak in on this forum I should  like to have explanations

I have a Dell XPS L702X, with 3D Video, so has 4 x SODIMM's and I run 64bit Linux (Gentoo). I've installed Kingston Memory.

Ended up with 2 x 8Gb and 2 x 4Gb modules - giving me a working 24Gb of RAM. Works just fine.

A filtered output from 'lshw' shows:

    *-memory

         description: System Memory

         physical id: 32

         slot: System board or motherboard

         size: 24GiB

       *-bank:0

description: SODIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1333 MHz (0.8 ns)

            product: 9905428-093.A00LF

            vendor: Kingston

            physical id: 0

            serial: 6B0416D6

            slot: ChannelA-DIMM0

            size: 8GiB

            width: 64 bits

            clock: 1333MHz (0.8ns)

       *-bank:1

description: SODIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1333 MHz (0.8 ns)

            slot: ChannelA-DIMM1

            size: 4GiB

            width: 64 bits

       *-bank:2 - as bank 0 - SODIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1333 MHz (0.8 ns) 8Gb

       *-bank:3 - as bank 1 - SODIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1333 MHz (0.8 ns) 4 Gb

Can't see wh 4 x 8Gb would not work.

Friend has a single 8Gb 1600 MHz (0.6vns) SODIMM and claims it workseven faster than 1333MHz

I have the GeForce GT 555M and 3GB of video RAM, but I only have 2 RAM slots. How do I TELL if I ordered the 3D version or not? (in fact, I got this one used, but I can't see on my system specs if it was supposed to be a 3D version or not). I downloaded hwinfo, and my asset tag is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> but I don't see mobo part #'s.

thanks.
