Dell Latitude D600 COM problems

Question

I've got the following problem. I've got a Latitude D600. With that laptop I want to configure Cisco switches and routers. For that I've got a serial cable that I connect to the Cisco switch / router. I use the program hyperterminal (hypertrm under Windows) to make a connection.   All this works fine on my old Latitude C640, but when I configure my D600 with the same parameters and try to connect I get the message : 'Couldn't open COM1. Check port settings.' The port works fine, I can connect a serial mouse to it. I've updated my BIOS, a system sofware and have installed Notebook System Software.   Still I can't get a connection with the Cisco devices. What seems to be the problem? Can this problem be solved?

Did you get your serial port (com1) working? I have a similar problem with my Latitude. The serial port seems to work with a mouse conencted but will not work with another serial device connected (in my case, connection to a slot car track device). It's left me puzzled.

You may have to go into the BIOS and enable the appropriate COM port. Rob

my COM port does not work any more after Bios upgrada from A09 to A14.

there are also other strange indications like "network port was disabled" after disconnecting the modem.

no solution up to now and no way to get back the A09?!

Hi there,

had the same thing about 2 months ago with our D600. Try disabling the infrared port and check serial port to com1. In Windows try to uninstall any COM-Port Software like Nokia Phone Software if you have. This helped me to make COM1 working again.
Try that and reply here please.

A few days ago we get a brand new D505 Laptop. Strange things going on again with Serial Port COM1. I try to connect with serial cable to our Level One Switches, same as dotNL without any chance. The serial port seems not to work. I have called DELL Support and the technical have tried to help me with my problem. He and I couldn´t make the serial port working. The Laptop is brand new. After 30 minutes of trying to fix the problem Dell decided to change the motherboard. The Laptop was delivered today repaired and with a new motherboard. The thing again. Now i´m thinking of reinstalling the laptop. The D600 Laptop is working fine now, but the D505 isn´t working at all. :-(

Call Dell. In order to fix the problem they had to replace my motherboard.   I must warn you that it will be difficult for you to get someone to understand and realize that you have a hardware problem. You will be asked to update bios, patch the operating system, reinstall the operating system (yes, you read correctly) and only after ALL of these options failed, you will receive next day service in about 3 days ;-)   Good luck if you're still having the problem!!!
