Dell Memory Upgrade causes "RTC Error

I upgraded my CPxJ's Latitude using the Dell-recommended memory upgrade on my Dell user site, also sold by Dell.  On installation, the system entered the BIOS screen but when the "sliding" progress indicator under the Dell logo reached about 2/3's across the screen went blank and provided the following error

"RTC mode fixed - Time and Date may be wrong"

then seconds later

"Time-and-day clock stopped"

then no further activity.

I cannot enable the system to boot from floppy or CD (F2 and F12) don't respond.

The telephone tech support has tried and failed success in resolving this solution despite several tries and approaches.  His assessment was that the BIOS may have been compromised with the upgrade but the motherboard was intact (lest the BIOS's "welcome to Dell" )We were both on the same line to the Dell post warranty center and the person there not only seemed unwilling to provide a solution form their end even though the tech support person stated several times to him that we had exhausted all options at our mutual ends of the phone line.

Suffice it to say, though I appreciate the tech support's attempts to work with the problem, I'm not pleased with Dell beyond him.

So short form:  Did I just pay good money to Dell to turn what was a functioning Dell laptop into a doorstop.  Or is there a resolution that I and the tech support fellow overlooked.  I'm seeing some spotty references in some back entries about a CMOS battery but not much detail showing that this is a mostly positive solution.  Is this a potential solution.  If so, can these be replaced by a skilled home/office user.

Thanks Much
Bill

The CMOS battery is under the Palmrest and plugs into the board near the keyboard and touchpad connectors, but I never heard of it stopping the boot completely when dead. Usually you will get an error message on boot saying Time and Date not set and you will lose you changes from default settings in BIOS Setup. Before removing the palmrest, remove just the keyboard and unplug the CMOS battery and leave it unplugged overnight. In the AM, try to boot the machine without reconnecting it. Also try removing the Main battery from the laptop and boot from the AC adapter only.
