Dell Studio 1558 won't boot

Hi everyone!

Since yesterday my laptop crashed while I was watching a movie via HDMI (image froze, sound played on (sound via HDMI)). It didn't respond to anything so I turned it down and wanted to power it up to proceed the film.

This however, wasn’t going to happen. The screen stayed blank (didn't even see the Dell logo). I tried different things, without HDD, other RAM bank, without battery, without AC charger and a fresh CMOS battery. All without success..

I also tried the trick with the AC charger disconnected and without battery, holding the power button for 30 seconds or so and try again afterwards. Didn't helped as well..

I've read about a hardware check that could be done by holding Fn and powering it up. First I heard a sort of melody, then 3 beeps, pause, 2 beeps, pause and 1 beep (3-2-1). Unfortunately I couldn’t find this beep-code anywhere on the web..

Is there any way to rescue my laptop? My warranty is just expired, the laptop is 2.5 years old and I really want to use it for a bit longer!

Hardware specs:
Intel i7 720 QM
6 GB of DDR 3 RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 5470

Thanx in advance!!

About $200-300 for a board.

Dont go for dell support if not in warranty. It will cost 17k plus with all taxes. I too had same issue with my dell studio 1558, i5, 4 gb, ATI 545v model. The issue is due to memory failure of gpu or RAM. Search for local trusted repair center, they should fix it under 2k.

Hi everyone!

I was facing the same problem with my 1558 too (System was showing Black screen. Even not able to see Dell logo. I got sound of DVD drive and Hard running). Thanks you and other friends here, I ran LCD BIST test and the colors was shown. Then I pressed an held Fn key and the Pressed power bottom to perform hardware test. suddenly, the Dell logo was appeared. when Dell logo was showing, I pressed F2 key and went into BIOS setting and reset default setting and saved it. Surprisingly, everything is OK now.

Hope the problem never come back again and yours will be solved.

Thanks & Regard

Hi

i also have a dell 1558 and have blank screen with HDD firing up and the colours bars working. This happened soon after the warranty expired.

It seems odd that so many people have exactly the same problem and some have said it occurred after the warranty expired. I think this is a obsolescence issue so that hardware fails and we have to pay out for a replacement part or a new laptop.

I would like like to know what Dell is going to do about this as I do not see why I should pay for any parts or cost of fixing my laptop due to a design flaw.

Hi, I have a similar problem with my 4 year old Dell Studio 1558 - every so often it freezes and the screen goes to an odd checker board pattern with what I was working on still relatively visible behind. Shortly after this the screen goes black. Attempting a reboot results in the screen remaining black - the HDD starts up, and the processor fan kicks in, but there is no further evidence of the boot up process going on. The processor fan does not go to the same speed that it normally does when booting up under normal circumstances. Sometimes I am able to get my display to return to normal but cannot replicate this. I have tried removing the battery, operating it with power cable only, battery cable only, and run the power down by holding the power switch with neither plugged in. I have also tried the LCD test (holding D whilst pressing the power key) and the screen displays the block colours red green blue white and black. From the discussion here it sounds like the video card is on its last legs - is there anything that I can do to try to resolve this? Thanks in advance!
