Dell Studio XPS 16 Audio not working

Sorry If this post already exists, I just tried to post - but I don't think it worked.

Iv been having audio problems since I brought this laptop  -Dell Studio 1640- a few months ago.  At first the speakers went, so i just plugged it into another set of speakers which worked fine.  However, I don't think the speakers are broken, as sometimes when the speakers are plugged in and i close down a program, or hit 'test' in sound>playback devices sound plays from the laptops speakers.
I tried to fix this problem a while ago by installing a 'fixed IDT HD driver', but this made my laptop crash every time i tried to play any audio.  So i reinstalled the version from the DVD that came with the laptop.  I also hoped that upgrading to windows 7 might have helped - but it didn't.
However, that's not the main problem, as i have some lovely speakers.
When I plugged in a usb microphone (/a lightsnake cable) all hell broke loose.  At first I couldn't get any playback to work until i unplugged the microphone.  Then everything worked fine for a short period, later i needed to reboot and unplug the mic in order to get sound, and finally rebooting didn't work.
Now when I can get sound to play through my speakers I consider myself lucky.

Any  one have any ideas???  Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Rob, here is a procedure that was explained by forum member Niike2  He posted a link to it earlier in this thread.

1. Open the "Sound" control panel.
2. Select the "Playback" tab.
3. Select "Independent Headphones" as the playback device.
4. Select the "Recording" tab.
5. Select "Microphone Array" as the recording device.
6. Select "Properties".
7. Select the "Listen" tab.
8. Check the box labeled "Listen to this device".
9. In the dropdown box labeled "Playback thru this device" select "Independent Headphones".
10, Close open dialog boxes and return to the "Playback" tab.
11. Select ""Speakers/Headphones" as the playback device.

If this workaround works, audio will now come through the speakers. This has only been confirmed to work with a Studio XPS 1640, a Latitude 6400, and a Studio 1555. Some people with other models reported that they do not have a "Listen" tab, so I would say this workaround is dependent upon the audio driver in one's computer. The XPS 1640 audio driver (IDT R261324) is compatible with these models (with Vista or 7):
Studio Laptop 1555
Studio Laptop 1557
Studio Laptop 1558
Studio XPS 1640
Studio XPS Laptop 1645
Studio XPS Laptop 1647

The Latitude audio driver (IDT R267814)  is compatible with these models (with Vista or 7):
Latitude E4200
Latitude E4300
Latitude E4310
Latitude E5400
Latitude E5410
Latitude E5500
Latitude E5510
Latitude E6400
Latitude E6400 ATG
Latitude E6400 XFR
Latitude E6410
Latitude E6410 ATG
Latitude E6500
Latitude E6510
Latitude XT2
Latitude XT2_XFR
Latitude Z600

I've got a deeper problem- my microphone array is switched off because apparently my xps 16 thinks there's already an external microphone plugged in, when there isn't. I know this because the IDT control panel says there's an unidentified device plugged into my microphone jack!

I've tried rebooting, reinstalling drivers, etc. none of it works because I'm pretty sure the problem has to do with the hardware. What can I do?

I installed the audio driver (IDT R261324) as it said, but there's still no "Listen" tab. Any idea? I'm using Studio XPS 1640 with Vista by the way.

I don't have an explanation. You could try the other IDT drivers for the Studio XPS 1640.

support.dell.com/.../previousversions.aspx

Or you could replace the jack board on your model if you want to fix the sense pin.

I've tried all the other drivers, but still it didn't come out. On my Windows 7 laptop there is a "Listen" tab, but not on my Vista. Or maybe it just Vista that doesn't have a "Listen" tab?

I know this is an old thread, but still, hope it helps someone ...

I have recently had a similar problem - I could hear sound coming from the speakers, but not from the headphones when I plugged them in. After reading other posts in this thread and the "Headphone jack FAQ" I went on to check if my problem was a HW or a SW problem, but went about it another way.

I tested by booting up Ubuntu Live Desktop 12.04 to test if there is sound in my headphones with an alternative, Linux, driver and found that both speakers and headphones operated normally in Ubuntu.

After restarting the computer and booting back to Windows I was suprised to find the problem was corrected in Windows as well.

 Here is some more background:

- After having detected the problem in the first place, I've restarted the system multiple times to no effect, so it was booting up Ubuntu that somehow fixed the problem, not simply restarting the system.

- Previous to the detecting the problem I've been playing around with different Linux distros so it's quite possible one of them had caused the problem in the first place. (My current best theory is there is some sort of a 'logical switch' in the ITD firmware that can be mishandled to produce this behaviour, and was reset by Ubuntu's audio driver.)

--

I'd very much like it if someone having the same or similar problem could try and confirm if this procedure (booting up in Ubuntu Live Desktop 12.04) helps ...
