This error indicates that the computer is not recognizing the boot sector of the hard drive. Typical ways around this would be to boot to a floppy or CD, then load the program. Unfortunately, the resolution for this error usually includes formatting and reinstalling the operating system. I recommend backing up the data on your hard drive before proceeding.
You said "Typical ways around this would be to boot to a floppy or CD, then load the program." What do you mean by this? What program?
I booted from the Windows 2000 cd, ran CHKDSK, did a fixboot and fixmbr from the Recovery Console, and it didn't work in the end. Then I tried re-installing Windows 2000, so I followed all the steps, and then it takes a few minutes to inspect the hard drive, after it finishes, it seems like it restarts to load the re-installation of Windows but it again stalls at the black blank screen. Not even re-installing it works. What can I do?
Try using the debug script to set all bits on the hard drive to 0. This should make your hard drive like new. You can then reinstall the operating system.
I have the exact same problem as above, but on an Inspiron 5150. My question: how to a recover the data on the hard drive? From the previous posts, it appears that I would need to boot from CD, but I had manually disabled that option in the BIOS. Is there any other way?
