E6430 Won't install driver updates and won't turn on after sleep - please help

Okay, I just acquired this lovely unit: intel i5 3340 2.7, 8 G Ram, 128 G SSD.  2 problems:

1. The driver update feature on the site says I need a chipset driver update, about 129 MB, but it won't install after several attempts, even though it says successfully installed.

2. If I close the lid or put the unit to sleep, the lock screen will come on after opening the lid, but login screen will not appear.  I've been searching forums from Dell, Microsoft, etc, with no solution found yet.  This morning, the laptop took two attempts to boot, even though I had shut it down last night.  Similar thing - lock screen only.

Dell professionals - please advise!

Yes, I'm replying to my own question.  I would HIGHLY recommend obtaining help from Dell on Twitter for out of warranty machines: @DellCaresPRO.  The tech was extremely efficient in guiding me through the process of clearing away unwanted background services, which were needlessly cluttering up my RAM.  At the same time, (s)he mentioned that Dell currently has an issue on their website, particularly with respect to driver downloads.  Once you've downloaded a driver, it will STILL SHOW UP ON THE LIST OF NECESSARY DRIVERS, like it was never installed.  This was invaluable information, as I was under the mistaken impression that the driver wasn't downloading.  Anyhow, the machine wakes up from sleep now, and I only have around 22 services running in the background.  Thanks to the Dell Twitter pros!
