error installing hardware

i'm trying to upload video from my video camera to my inspiron 9300 through the usb port.  i install the driver and restart.  i get the message that there was an error installing the new hard ware and it may not work prorperly.  this happens anytime i install any new hardware by the way.  then when i try to use any sofware to get my video from the camera it says there is no video device???  can anyone help.  i get no support from dell support.  i know the camera works because it worked great on my $500 Gateway, but I gave it to my niece for X-mas!  somebody please help.
