If the system is in warranty, contact Dell and they'll replace the drive.

If it's out of warranty, you will most likely need to purchase a 2.5" 7- or 9.5 mm SATA notebook drive.

I too am getting the 2000-0146 code.

I have two hard drives, and cannot boot windows from either. Both are out of warranty.

I did boot and run the PSA's and the smaller drive (secondary) is ok by test results.

I was able to boot via F2 but my options in both the bios categories do list the option to clear logs. What next? Am I overlooking it?

2000-0142 and 2000-0146 are two different errors.

The 0142 error means a drive has failed.

The 0146 means the BIOS log has a record of a drive that has failed its self test.  If you tested the second drive and it passed the test - was Windows installed on it while the drive was in the system, or did the drive come from another system?  If it came from another system ,  you will need to reload Windows onto the drive.

ENJ63, thanks for the quick reply. The error is 2000-0146 not 0142 for conformation.

My original post incorrectly identified that I did have "clear logs" option...I do not.

The secondary drive which is ok was originally in this tower as primary, so I would think it has win7 home premium still on it. When I change the boot sequence to boot there first I get the same black screen loop so I am now attempting to clear the CMOS log by removing the CMOS battery.

I had added a new 2TB drive a little over a year ago because what is now the secondary drive, was primary and was making noises. I feared that it was on  its way out...thus the new drive. I made the original drive the secondary and was using it as my back up location source. All my files should be available from one of the two drives once I get the logs cleared.

I believe I was able to "restore defaults" and save from the F2 available menu, but it did not correct the issue if I did it correctly...so I may run into the same issue with my battery removal attempt. Can run recuva after issue is resolved if need be, so MY temp is not elevated yet... LOL

I have a recover disk for win7 home premium...doesn't help for what ever reason. I also have a full install set of disks for Win 8 Pro...can't do anything with those yet either. I cannot get to a command prompt to try to run chkdsk /r as safe mode is unavailable.

fortunately, I have this laptop in the interim to work thru the issue...running win 8 on it.

will report back my test results

**update to previous post**

removed the battery...waited about 30 min...reinstalled and powered up.

won't boot windows.

can boot to recovery disk- start up repair cannot fix because the drive is inaccessible. system restore cannot fix.

command prompt via recovery disk- chkdsk /r cannot fix - says drive is write protected

rebooted > F12 > custom tests > testing drive in question-

Confidence check- no issues > asked me to continue testing? > esc'd out of further testing

DST (short)- no issues> passed

read- running...says 212 minutes to complete

run the remaining tests of seek, SMART, verify run? or futile?

Under warranty:  Call Dell with the error and they'll replace the drive.

Out of warranty:  You need a new drive of the same type and physical dimensions you now have.

You'll also need a set of recovery media - if you didn't prepare one, you'll need to contact Dell for that (no charge under warranty;  charge applies if the warranty has expired).

If it's the 2000-0142 error and the system is under warranty, contact Dell for a replacement drive.

If it's that error and the system is out of warranty, you'll need to purchase a drive of the same type you now have.  You'll also need your recovery media - if you didn't make that, you'll need to purchase it (from Dell;  the hard drive can come from any vendor you choose).  The current cost for shipping recovery media out of warranty is about $50.
