Headphone jack socket damage

INSPIRON 12500 model no PPO2L

I use the headphone jack socket to output the sound signal to external speakers for better quality & volume. However the plastic circle holding it in position in the case has cracked & the socket has partially been displaced into the case. Dell have quoted £450 + vat for repair - they say that the sound card is integrated with the motherboard & that a new motherboard would be required. This is a ridiculous price for a trivial repair on a 2 year old laptop. In fact I suspect that the jack socket is OK & that it is only a means of re-anchoring it to the housing that is required

Has anybody had similar problems? Any ideas? Is there another jack socket I could use for sound output? There are 3 jack sockets on my board

1. mic in

2. headphones out (the damaged one)

3. ((-)) approximation to the symbol. I don't know what this one is for - but nothing happens when I plug my speakers in.

Any help would be appreciated

GeorgetheDragon,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

The telephone technician is correct.  The only sure-way to correct the problem is to have a motherboard replacement performed.  The audio ports on your system can be seen in this diagram.  The audio ports (from left to right) are:

  • Line in jack.
  • Line out jack.
  • Microphone jack.

creative labs offers a sound card that slides into the card slot, its about 130$ , a lot cheaper that 450$, and it significantly upgrades the sound abilities of your laptop. i might check it out, because im having the same dilema. i plug my laptop into my 5.1 surround sound system and the jack got cracked and messed up.
