Heavily recurring MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

I've had problems with this "Blue Screen of Death"/sudden shutdown -problem for a while now, but have been able to work around it up until this point. The first time that I encountered it was when I tried to use various USB-devices with this old Intel CS431 webcam also plugged in. It wasn't too difficult to avoid. Now it's giving me some real trouble.

Model: Latitude C640 OS: XP SP2

I'm using a Combo 2.0 Cardbus for USB-access. I'm trying to install a Tascam US-122L USB audio-unit. What occurs when I plug it in is A) the computer turns off the card B) it brings up MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION 0x0000009C (0x00000000, 0x8054D570, 0xA2000000, 0x84010400) or C) it shuts off or restarts the computer without offering the error-warning. It also happens in Safemode.

No drivers have yet been installed for the US-122; the installer asks for the device to be plugged in at a certain point before it loads the drivers and configures the device.

The closest I came to getting it all to work out was when I unplugged the cardbus and then attached the US-122 to it, and then plugged them both back into the machine. The mouse lagged for a bit and I got the "New Hardware Detected" wizard. Windows was unable to install it by itself. When I checked the Device Manager it said that one of the USB ports could not be turned on.

I know the cardbus is still functioning because I'm using it with a wireless adapter and a mouse as I type.

This issue's complicated; I'm aware, but if anyone has had a similar problem and has been able to find a way to resolve it, any info would be appreciated.

An MCE is a warning generated by the hardware to tell the OS that something is wrong. It can indicate issues such as bad memory, PCI-E bus problems, a CPU cache fault, etc. You almost certainly have a hardware fault and should probably call a tech. It might be worth re-seating the RAM and any add-in modules first, but I'd just make it tech support's problem personally.
