Help - Inspiron 1525 shuts down randomly

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 that I purchased new in August. It started to shut off at random times very sporadically about two months after that. There is no blue screen, no warning, no reboot - just shuts down. I contacted Dell support last week, after it started shutting down several times a day. The support tech had me turn off the option that shuts the machine down when there is an error. It seemed to help for a few days and now it is back to shutting off for no apparent reason. Has anyone had this issue and how did you fix this? It is so annoying!

It certainly could be the problem and it's fairly easy to check.

It is very easy to clean the fan/heat sink on a Dell Inspiron, you don't need any technical knowledge, just simply type it into google and then you can do it yourself in under 10 mins.

I would certainly suggest that before you waste your time on hold/on a support call.

If cleaning the fan/heat sink doesn't work and Dell try telling you that your hard drive needs replacing and want to charge you £60 for the privilege, don't let them! This is what they tried to do to me, when in fact there, at least was, a problem with the motherboards they used in production. This is a problem Dell are aware of and should repair for you free of charge, as they knew about this issue but kept using the same corrupt design. However, I can't remember if my laptop was still in warranty (it probably would have been) but they were adamant that they needed to charge me at first.  Once they did take my laptop in however, it was repaired very quickly and has continued to work since then.

I resolved my issue back in 2008, so I am speaking three years out of date here, but that is what happened to me.

OMG!  I can't believe it!  One switch in the back and that was it!  My right one was not "engaged" or switched properly...or whatever!  Boy.. I hope this works! Thank you!  I have no idea how that happened.. but I bet that has been my problem for the past few weeks!!!!

I did as you suggested, and my processor thermal-cooling assembly was filthy.  I cleaned it (very carefully), and now the laptop is quiet as a mouse. However, as soon as I started typing this, it shut down again... If it's a temperature issue, then perhaps it hasn't had a chance to cool down yet?  Anyway, I'll monitor it and see how it goes from here.

Thank you for the invaluable help :)

I just had a customer bring in an Inspiron 1525.  I found this thread to be somewhat helpful, but here was the fix that worked for me: I opened the back (bottom) cover to expose the heatsink and found that the heatsink's fastening screws were much looser than they should have been.  I tightened them up as much as I could, and the problem has now gone away.

Also note that the laptop was having this problem even though the heatsink was clear of dust and debris.  The laptop would not run for more than 10 or 15 minutes without shutting itself off.

It's an easy fix, so I hope this helps someone out there!

Same situation with my computer...I "fixed it" with the purchase of an additional fan that sets under my laptop...keeps it well ventilated with a lot of air flowing....that was a while back (3-4 months) hasn't shut down since!

Try it...it might help!

Make sure you try opening up the bottom and cleaning out the internal fan.  It's probably overheating during game play because of the increased processor demands.  So a clogged fan becomes an issue during that heavy use.  An external cooler might help, but doesn't really solve the problem.

Let us know if you find a big mess in your internal fan.....I'm guessing you will.

If there is a suit for this model, I hope we are told about it. It just started happening to my computer. I need this laptop to be working! Its not under warranty. I have no money to replace it. :(

HICCUP - did you read any of the forum posts?  This is very easy to fix.  Your internal fan is most likely full of junk.  We don't need to sue the manufacturer because you're laptop has been sucking in dust and hair from YOUR house.  Just clean it out.  There are simple instructions that I've posted before.

Ok I just read through this whole thread and not sure if the fan is my problem or not.  My computer just shuts down unexpectedly only when running on the battery.  If I plug it in it will start right back up and run for hours.  Any thoughts??

Am a computer repair geek, and i have solved this problem before, the solution to it is i have to take the laptop apart, piece by piece. and Reseat the Heat sink and secured it to the graphix card and cpu. The real problem of the random shut downs wasnt due to the heat, but lose connection. So make use of the screw drivers and take it apart. it wont take you long to have it fixed.
