Help! System hangs up after memory upgrade
Hi,
after installing new memory (2x 512MB Apacer CL2.5 PC2700) my Inspiron 8600 often gets sudden hang ups with Windows XP (FAT32). It happens all of a sudden without any error messages (no Bluescreen), and is not reproducable. It can be while being idle or on gaming, no matter what the temperatures are, every 2-3 hours or sometimes one time a day.
Installing the original memory again, the notebook stops with the hang ups, so it must be an issue with the memory, but what?
Apacer should be a good quality, i guess..
Why do i get these hang ups, and how can i resolve this?
regards

I would get my money back for the Apacer memory and buy Crucial they have a selector on the web site and the memory is certified so to speak to work on your system.

To give you a bit more complete answer...
Some motherboards are extremely sensitive to the type of RAM installed on them. The ones used in Dell's laptops are sensitive, and some brands of RAM just flat don't work. No real telling if it's because of the manufacture quality of the RAM or what, but my experience points to quality as the culprit.
Crucial makes some of the best RAM there is, especially in the notebook-type RAM arena (SODIMM). Corsair is another highly-respected manufacturer - I'll use only Corsair in my desktop machines - but their laptop selection is a bit scanty, and it's expensive. Some people have had good success using Kingston, but I've also seen more complaints about Kingston laptop RAM than I have about Crucial.
Take the Apacer back where you got it, get your money back (you may have to fight them on that point), and buy Crucial.
HTH.
