Hello,

I also want to be able to fresh install my Windows 8. I have a Dell XPS 12 bought from Canada.

If I understand correctly to do a fresh installation I will need either my Windows Key or a special DVD with Windows 8.

As far as I know getting my key from Dell is impossible. However, can I request somehow this DVD from DELL.

My boyfriend will be in USA next month so he will be able to get it for me from there if it cannot be send outside US.

Could you please advise me how to request such a DVD?

Thank you.

Hi Kiran, I have a Dell Inspiron 5421 computer which came with Windows 8 Pre-installed. I want to change the OS to Windows OS 8.1 Pro. It's difficult to upgrade or reinstall due to the encrypted Windows key in the BIOS. How can I remove the existing Windows Key from the BIOS to install the new OS 8.1 Pro. You kind help would be appreciated.

You don't need to. Use the Windows Anytime Upgrade and install the 8.1 license key you purchased.  The rest is automatic.

HI

I'm trying to re-install Windows 8 as it is not working properly, but did not make a copy of the  Dell software image when I bought my Dell XPS 8500. I can not now make a copy of the software image.

When I use Dell Backup and Recovery, it says "it can not detect the recovery partition on this computer it may be missing or corrupt. To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the recovery partition please use your system recovery discs"

In the past I would have just re-installed the OS from the provided discs and I'm not sure what to do next. At the moment the OS is not working correctly.

Help!

Thanks
Paul

You are going to need to contact Dell for the recovery disc.

this is an old post but listed as unanswered.
You can just use the following VBS script to display the key that is your key

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27129-product-key-find-windows-8-a.html

scroll down to Option #5.

Also, If you install the same version of windows 8 ( i did from a non dell oem iso), it will activate for you seeing that its embedded into the "super bios" we all have now.

hope this helps you out if your still stuck (or anyone else who has this problem)

I tried the link and script in option 5 and it said that  it was not found in the UEFI firmware?

Yes it does ask for the product key. I replaced the Hard drive on my XPS and used the Windows 8.1 cd that came with it when refreshing, and the computer is still asking for my product key. I even downloaded the BIOS update and it still pops up every hour or so and says I need to activate Windows.

Was the system originally shipped from Dell with Windows 8?

Yes and the hard drive went out the third day of owning it. It was warranted they shipped me a new one and I had all kinds of trouble h]getting it to boot. Finally they refreshed it and now it says secure boot not configured and every hour or so it pulls up a screen that says activate windows. It shows me the last 5 letters/numbers of the product key but when I use programs to get the key from Bios it says none activated. Dell just tells me its injected on the mother board that the hard drive they sent me had it on it also. I have downloaded every update, (even the bios update) went into bios and ran diagnostics, and refreshed the computer.
