Inspiron 4000 keyboard CTRL button doesn't work!!!

Can anyone help me? Only the CTRL button will not work. I cannot do anything that requires the CTRL. This means BOTH CTRL buttons. EVERYOTHER button works fine. I ran the diagnostics CD and everything went ok. Help please.

Try connecting an external keyboard - do the CTRL keys function on the external?

You can also try the following: Click on Start|Find (or Search)|Files or Folders. Find all instances of the file named keyboard.sys and rename this file to kbdsys.old. Close the Find window and reboot the system once more. Test the keyboard in Windows Notepad or another editor to verify its functionality.

I have an Inspiron 8000 with Windows 2000 and have upgraded with all of the latest patches offered by Microsoft.  My Ctrl key has stopped functioning.  I first noticed this problem when I could no longer group files or folders together by using the Ctrl key to highlight them.  Also, I can no longer get the Task Manager using Ctrl Alt Del.  Also, I am not able to use Ctrl Break to break out of old Lotus Macro programs.  I have removed the Ctrl key cap and look for anything blocking it.  The spring looks intact.  I reinstalled the Ctrl key OK.

I do not have an external keyboard to use to connect to my laptop and I do not have the trouble shooting CD that others have mentioned.  How can I get one of these trouble shooting CD's?

Many of the identifying letters have worn off my keys tops and I would consider buying a new keyboard if it could be installed locally.  My warranty ran out 4 months ago and am concerned that shipping my computer back to Dell for repair would cost more that the computer is worth now.
