Inspiron 6400: "Battery not installed"

Hi, just 2 days after my warranty expired (11/1/2007) my battery died :s Already noticed it was holding less charge than usual some time ago, but now the BIOS says it's not connected!, what are my options?, i supposedly have an extended warranty until 10/31/2009. Anybody saw this behavior before?

If the system runs normally on AC power, replace the battery. Regardless of the length of warranty of the extended service plan, the battery is covered for the first 12 months.

Well, it seems to have an internal clock :S Any way, tried with my "not connected" battery in it's place and disconnected the AC adapter. Left running an script that would write the date/time on a file every minute. It started at 01:18 and finished at 02:20, so my "not connected battery" gave me an hour of autonomy...

I think the same thing happened to my Latitude D520 the other day. The computer runs fine when connected to AC power, but the battery will not charge. The BIOS tell me that no batteries are connected. But it is, and were well working few days ago. My computer are 13 months old, so I guess my warranty will not cover this. But how can I be sure about a new battery will fix the problem?

Well, if it works fine out with just AC, i think we could blame the battery.... Already ordered one, will report back once i receive it...

PS: although the bios reports my battery as not connected, it still provides around 60 minutes of autonomy...

Yes, it works fine with just the AC. I have some autonomy as well, I can run for several minutes with the battery which is not connected:) Looking forward to hear about your new battery will solve your problem.

I am having the same problem. Actually it has progressed to the point where I don't have any autonomy and as soon as it becomes unplugged, it dies. This is very inconvenient. I am wondering if I should try buying another battery to see if this will fix the issue but the batteries are expensive. This computer is only a year and a half old. It seems like this is a common problem on this forum, although this battery was not part of the recall from last year. Whats the deal? Thanks!

Well, i was offered locally (Dell Partner i think) an original 9-cell Battery for $160+taxes. They told me there were just 2 in existence and if i don't hurry up, ordering a new one would cost $400 :s

Then went to eBay and found a 9-cell battery for my laptop (KD476) at around $69 plus $40 for shippment (still cheaper).

The guy listed it as "Dell ORIGINAL product, not THIRD PARTY or REFURBISHED unit.", but obviously that's not guarantee. I can only confirm it once it arrives

26 days before my first year warranty expires, I get the error when booting "Warning battery can not be identified.  The system will be unable to charge this battery" when booting.  Bypassing this message seems to allow the battery to charge and the aptop seems to on the battery, although not for as long as when I originally purchased the laptop, less than one year ago.
For those of you also experiencing similar, did a replacement battery resolve your errors?

Five month old D620 - about 4 weeks ago, it indicated it was on AC power even when on Battery. Just the cord on the task bar and when I click on it, shows no battery present. AC cord works fine, Battery works fine; lasts about 1 1/2 hours. But I get no warning when it's dying because the system "thinks" it is on AC. I decided to try a new battery out of a spare laptop in the office.

I put the new battery in and all symptoms went away.

I am returning the battery to Dell for replacement as it is still under warranty.

I'm curious curuspy, did your computer not take a chage, but work fine on ac power? mine does and when the battery is in it says it's not connected. also when it's in the charge indicator light on the laptop stutters sometimes and is solid sometimes after a restart it changes from stuttering to solid tillt he next restart and it's random whetherit'll be stuttering or solid. but when i pull the ac out i get a orange indicator light and it dies after a min. the battery indicator on the battery itself shows all green dots lighting up. I'm praying i just need to buy a new battery to fix this.

The battery had around 30 minutes of charge when unplugged, had to disable the ACPI action on the OS, otherwise the laptop would suspend/poweroff right away after disconnecting the AC as the battery did'nt exist "officially", also got the 5 green dots with the included test, even when the battery was discharged, the new one only showed 3 or 4 dots when arrived, as it wasn't fully charged.
