Inspiron 9400/ATI x1400/video flicker on external dual lcds

I researched the forum and found that flickering on the external outputs may be related to font size and cables...
I've checked those items they are correct. My issue has been narrowed down to having both the DVI and VGA running together in a dual monitor setup... as long as only one is running, everything is nice and dandy... put both running and there's a quick (less than a second) flicker and it's something that could happen one second and not happen again for 30-90 seconds... maybe more...

I've read that running both external outs puts load on the card, but I couldn't imagine that  it's something that can't be resolved...

I am running the latest drivers from dell 7/15/2006 for ATI... what are the chances that the card is defective?

any other suggestions?

if the opinion is that the card is defective, what is the best way to warranty it? meaning... I don't want to be on the phone with a dell tech support guy for 3 hours before they finally realize, "Ok... we'll look into it"

that is quite bad... my laptop has been on all night...been using it for about 30 min no flicker... I used to buy nVidia but there was a rough spot during the win2k years that upset me... everyone talked about ATI and since then I've bought ati and never experienced issues until now... there's about 8 ATI  video cards on desktops that I know of that have not had any issues at all, but maybe the is the key, they are desktops not laptops.

My symptoms have become quite random. After my last post, I travelled to my client's location and set up the 9400 on four half-inch spacers on the desk. Been working for three hours with virtually no flickering.

If this was an airflow through the bottom problem, then why would it have been worse this morning, when my 9400 sits on an elevated, perforated metal tray with all kinds of air circulation?

Hmm...

note: new A02 bios doesn't help.

oh, oh...

crossing fingers... so I've always liked to install drivers direct from the manufacturer... unfortunately the mobility chips haven't had that much direct support until recent months it seems... with an 8600 I had found some tweak app that allowed you to install the actual catalyst driver from ATI..... so I searched...

and found...

It tells you to uninstall the ati items before doing this... I have not had any flicker... by now, I should have and I've actually been overloading the laptop with apps as a test... everything is smooth... obviously make your decision on installing... for my 9400 with an x1400 ati card it work on defaults and when it asks if it's a laptop(window pop up title bar) I selected yes. I am not overclocking anything nor care to do so. So the driver seems stable and I will post again on no-flicker stability.

1 mozilla browser doing a 300 meg download

visual studio 2005 open with  project

dreamweaver 8 open with a project

one instance of windows media with a video playing

one instance of divx player playing another separate video

google earth app running

winamp streaming audio from the net

photoshop cs2 running with 4 files open about 8 megs each...

Flash 8 open with a project and debugging...

remote desktop running to 2 locations...

queryanalyzer running...

sql enterprise manager also running...

oh.... this baby is running smooth... so smooth...

oh I forgot and three web cam connections to the net...

so smooth... so freaking smooth...

I love this baby... she better not let me down... it should have flickered by now... but it ain't doing so...
I think she is happy... cool and happy... oh ... so happy...

l m a o...

I've always believed in the hardware that dell provides...

I am definitely impressed at the moment... so could it in fact be the driver... I'll keep posting...

Go, Maaximuus, go!! I'll stand by and wait for the results of your testing before I commit to a change. I did try installing non-Dell drivers prior to my HD crash, and managed to screw my machine up a bit. So I'll wait to hear from you after you've had a chance to test this for a couple of days.

Sounds hopeful...

Looking forward to Maaximuus' long term results too.

Meanwhile, before starting a new thread, here a question, as you have the same X1400 with Inspiron (9400 or similar).

I know our other (Dell) machines (with Windows XP) don't do this, and I haven't installed one piece of new software on this one.

Problem is:

After screensaver when coming back, after a couple of seconds there is an obnoxious redraw on both screens.  Takes long (a second or two), is obnoxious (black areas).  This isn't supposed to be that way.  Does e.g. Maaximuus observe that same problem?  Does it go away with any trick or upgrade?

After reading http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html I'm considering ATI Tray Tools http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/ but might just be conservative and live with it as it is.  After all, my biggest problems seems solved a while ago.

Suggest you check the screen saver you are using. If it is something that involves OpenGL, such as flying captions, it uses a lot of CPU cycles and memory. I just use the default WinXP logo or a blank screen. Don't have any issues coming back.

When testing, watch and see how much disk activity it is doing while reloading. This is a clue (it may be swapping a whole bunch of data).

No OpenGL or such.  Used Marquee, now also tried WinXP logo, problem persists.

Interestingly the problem (couple seconds after screensaver obnoxious redraw: black, slow, large areas) DOESN'T get triggered by the screensaver code, but by the PASSWORD locking code.

Proof:  First, if I move the mouse with the grace period before password locking (five seconds) it doesn't occur.  Second, if I turn off password locking it doesn't occur.

Hint:  I'm also (but not only) using savescrn.exe to test.  Problem existed before I used savescrn.exe to test.

And as I'm saying, we have a few quite similar machines here.  The one difference here is the ATI X1400.

What a painful experience.  I'm required to have the password on.  That flicker every time causes a reflex / fear "work data lost" until I consciously know it's ok.

OK, I took the leap. Yesterday, while in the middle of several days of tedius editing, involving adding ActiveX objects to a bunch of RoboHelp pages, I just started cringing everytime my screen flashed.

So... the Dell drivers have been excised and the Omega 3.8.273 drivers have replaced them. I had a few bad moments on the first big reboot after setting up the monitors, when the Omega drivers were slow to initiate and flashed back and forth a few times. But then, they came up and everything looks good at the moment.

Now, the 'blip' testing begins... :0

Here is my status:  After I had it all working fine for many days (not sure whether one week or two) now I start getting flickering again.  Here at a client's office, where it is rather cold.

It read about ATI Tray Tools (by some guy, not by ATI) and about PowerStrip and I installed them both, but then uninstalled them again.  I read about PCI latency, but can't figure for sure whether it also would apply to PCI-E and can't figure for sure those tools would set it right.  What's most disconcerting about those tools is that they don't seem to get basic facts right, like internally 1920x1200 and externally 1600x1200, they tell me both 1600x1200, which tells me they look in the wrong place or report wrongly, so I don't trust them with other settings either.

Then (in the spirit of Dell wanting me to remove everything) I removed my Intel wireless 10.5 dirver (the one with the bad rep for memory leaking, Dell A04) and went back to Intel wireless 10.1, Dell A03.  Didn't fix it either.  You expected that, right?

One reason why I tend to think it is a problem specific to ATI X1400 is that we have another Inspiron 9400 and an Inspiron 9200 and I haven't installed anything on this problem machine that isn't on the other ones (which I installed myself too).  Of course Dell wants me to run the machine with everything off, but what am I supposed to work then, just sit there and wait an hour or longer, watching it, doing nothing?

This flicker is obnoxious!

While at it, what do you get if you go into Registry Editor (command line regedit) and look at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\CDS\0000\0\Memory

at value

Size

I have

629 MB (0x00000275)

My Inspiron 9400 has 4GB of RAM (667MHz) in it (found out I could do that in the manual that came with our first 9400).  Windows XP, BIOS etc only give me 3GB.  That's what I needed.  At least if the video card would get to use some of the rest that would make me feel better about what the cost was.  Up there above 3GB there are multiple use of addresses and such.

Fyi, these registry entries are "written out" by some piece of ATI code.  That doesn't mean if you change them something will change in the way things work.  That's one reason why some tools report different settings, depending on where they are looking.  Even that it says 629 MB doesn't mean the card really uses it.  Just curious anyway.

So far, these Omega drivers seem to be doing the trick. I've used them for 8 hours and I haven't noticed any blipping. Stay tuned for more test results.

My ATI memory (from the registry) is 378MB in a 1Gig system.

I can't believe that I would have to download and install third party video drivers from a Gamer's website, in order to get my new Inspiron 9400 to work correctly. Go figure.

One of the noticeable improvements delivered by the Omega driver set is the way that they handle transitions between external monitors.

I move on an almost daily basis between my home office with an external UXGA monitor and a client's site, which has a external WSXGA+ monitor. In both cases, I have the system configured so that the external DVI monitors were the primaries and the the internal LCD on the 9400 was the secondary. Both setups are configured with the external monitor on the left.

With the Dell ATI drivers, when  I moved from home to client, the task bar would always revert to the internal LCD monitor (even though it is the secondary monitor). I would always have to drag the taskbar to the other window. This no longer is a problem with the Omega drivers.

When I moved from my client's to home, the primary monitor would come up in the same resolution as the internal LCD (1440 by 900) and I would have to reset the resolution to 1600 x 1200. The Omega drivers correctly figure this out.
