Install Windows XP on Dell XPS M1330

The Dell XPS M1330 is a great laptop but quite many of users like me can only use the Windows XP  since certain professional software can only run on XP and have no support on Vista.

I got my M1330 received on Aug 1 and had to install the XP on it anyway. I got it almost done but still have one driver issue. I would like to share my previous jobs done to save the time for other users having the same need. Also, I would like the community can help to resolve the remaining driver issue so that everybody can enjoy the M1330 with XP!  : )

Part I: Windows XP professional installation CD
Any Dell XP SP2 Pro installation CD for previous Dell models (what I used)
Advantage of using the Dell OEM XP CD is that it never ask for a CD-key and works prefectly
Surely it is up to you to buy a new Windows XP installation CD from Microsoft and enter the CD-key.

Part II: Download XP drivers for M1330
From Dell's "Support & Download" website, choose "XPS 1330" and "Windows XP" for driver download:
1. R153997.EXE: Intel Mobile Chipset driver
2. R141246.EXE: Ricoh Memory Card(1394,SD,MMC,MS,xD) driver
3. R160323.EXE: Creative Laptop Integrated Webcam driver
4. R160320.EXE: Creative Laptop Integrated Webcam applications
5. R155586.EXE: Dell Touchpad, Pointing Stick driver
6. R155246.EXE: Broadcom-59XX Ethernet driver
7. R127314.EXE: Network-Wireless 335 Bluetooth Module driver

Note that certain important XP drivers for M1330 are missing in Dell's support site.
We need to download them from different sources instead:
1. Display driver:
NVIDIA-GeForce 8400M GS
nv_gfgo_101.34-2kxp32.exe

2. Audio driver:
SigmaTel HD Audio Codec-Driver: Exactly chipset is "SigmaTel STAC 9288 HD Audio Codec"
Note that I cannot find the matched XP driver for this though there are many Sigmatel 92XX drivers.
(Seems the STAC 9288 is a very new HD audio codec chip that only Vista driver is availiable)

Thanks for DELL-Jimmy P's great help :smileyvery-happy:
The R158235.EXE is the correct Dell official XP audio driver for M1330...

3. Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini card driver (if you are using the 802.11N wireless card)
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
V11.1.1.0_XP_DRIVERS.zip and V11.1.1.0_XP32-Application.EXE

4. Fingerprint scanner driver:
UPEK-TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor
2.6_package.zip

5. Serial ATA (SATA) driver
Intel SATA driver (important for XP2 to support SATA HDD)
7kim06ww.exe

6. Microsoft UAA Bus driver for High Definition Audio CODEC support
Get the "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio CODEC"
XP patchs: B835221 WXP or B888111 WXPSP2, see Miscrosoft article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221 (if your XP is not SP2)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 (if your XP is already SP2)
The kb888111xpsp2.exe can actually downloaded from:

One problem so far: Whenever I close the lid, the LCD doesn't turn off. Under power options, the close lid action is set to "do nothing" which usually allows the LCD to turn off, least on my other XP laptop but it doesn't work on the m1330. Does anyone have the same problem or know of a fix?

Thanks. I got the SATA drivers to work. Now I only have to get the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio CODEC to work. To my surprise, the SigmaTel drivers work without installing the patch. But I'm still wondering if that patch will improve sound quality.

Hello Raymond: Thanks for your help but I am still unable to install the bluetooth, I attempted turning it on via the QuickSet which has been installed successfully although when I visit the Advance Settings of the WiFi Catcher the Bluetooth option is grayed out I am assuming cause the driver is not installed. That's my dilemma since I cannot install the driver I cannot do much else, if you have any other suggestions please let me know I am eager to get the bluetooth working and all will be complete for my M1330 with XP Pro. Thanks

Ahh!
I discovered, I don't have the nVidia gfx card installed.. I had the Intel Integrated chipset... and the Dell Drivers on the website didn't work.
So I downloaded the drivers directly from Intel and it now works beautifully!

Grrreat!
Now, all I have is a PCI DEVICE with a yellow exclamation point.

rikardkrvaric: Did you follow Raymond's instruction on the suggested driver installation order? I first installed Intel Mobile Chipset then Ricoh memory card driver. I think the PCI problem you have has something to do with the SATA driver installation. (Take a look at this link: http://www-900.ibm.com/cn/support/download/driver/ThinkDetail?DocId=XJCI-6N5C5P) and read 7kim06ww.txt The section which is relevant to us is "don't have a diskette driver and install Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver". install it and extract to C:\DRIVERS\WIN|IMSM. Then in bios, switch back to AHCI and enabled flash cache model. Complete the installation following the txt file instructions. Reboot After you done the above, then install the Nvidia Geforce drivers.

This forum is a gem. After endless research on new systems, I settled on the M1330 and couldn't be happier... except that my org will only allow me to run XP Pro. I have a couple of options for getting XP Pro installed, and with them come a couple of quick questions... 1. Option 1 - install a 100GB 7200rpm ATA drive that I have, keeping my 200GB SATA drive with Vista Ultimate for later when my office approves Vista. It already has a clean XP Pro install. Will that work as long as I follow directions to disable SATA as described above, and then install all the new drivers? Any recommendations on setting partitions and getting MediaDirect working under this scenario? 2. Option 2 - follow the directions above, imaging my Vista install and installing XP Pro. Questions -- does anyone know of a reliable freeware imaging program? Or has anyone used the imaging tool in BootIT NG? Also, the XP Pro CD I have is the original XP Pro (no service packs). I also have a SP2 install CD. Neither of these are from Dell. Should I be OK installing these in order: XP Pro CD, XP Pro SP2 CD, then running all the XP Pro updates after I get my system up & running (and connected to the Internet, of course)? Thanks for your help!

Hi, I just bought this laptop and am thoroughly disgusted by Vista, I want to 'upgrade' back to XP but every time i try to install it, I get past all the 'loading such and such driver' stage on the original installation screen, then right after it loads FAT32/NTFS drivers, it says 'starting windows' and then gives me the blue screen of death. I have tried the BIOS edits to enable ATA and disable that flash thing, doesn't matter, it just wont install. I'd really appreciate any help you guys can give me. We all have the exact same system, so if some of you can get XP to install, I must be doing something wrong. Thanks edit: the error says pci.sys if that helps.

You have to disable AHCI and flash cache in bios before you install Win XP. Did you format the hard drive in NTFS?

Okay, so I was finally able to install Windows XP, using the Media Center version that came with another computer. obviously that has sata support or something. so far so good, thanks in part to this thread and telling me where to get drivers. also, i'm hoping some of you will read this and chime in: when I hook up my laptop's headphone out to an outboard amplifier, I get horrible hiss/squeal/screeching sounds coming out of my loudspeakers. Its unbearably loud, and I dont understand why its happening. It only happens when the laptop is powered via the a/c cable. All that awful sound is gone if I use only battery power. Is anyone else's laptop doing this? I'm wondering if this is a hardware problem or a design problem, and hoping its the former, not the latter. I would love to use this laptop as in media center mode, seeing as it comes with that nifty remote, but this sound problem is quite annoying and unbarable, and makes media center useless.

The noise your hearing is called feedback, the speakers are not being turned off when you insert the headphone jack and noise is looping through the mike from the speakers. If you haven't yet, install the proper audio driver, if you have then there should be a setting in the audio properties in control panel to turn the speakers off when using headphones.

Caservant,

I don't know that you need to disable SATA for Vista to see your ATA drive, but you should be able to tell that quick enough.  If you've already got XP installed on a drive, I'd just pop that drive in and see if it'll boot up.  And if the drive is currently installed in another laptop, then you can even install the SATA drivers on it (R154200) before pulling it out.  I'd at least give that a shot.  The worst that can happen is you'll have to reinstall XP anyway.  You can forget about using the stand-alone MediaDirect Express (and the MD button) in this scenario, though.  The first step in installing the full blown MediaDirect is to use the MD3 CD to wipe the entire drive clean, including the Recovery partition.  (It does reinstall the little Utility partition.)

If you do have to do a full reinstall, I recommend slipstreaming the SATA drivers (again, R154200) into your XP Pro SP2 cd.  It's a breeze if you use Nlite, free from www.nliteos.com.  It sure beats disabling BIOS options, installing XP, installing drivers, and finally reenabling the BIOS options, expecially if you're going to be installing more than once (and face it, you will be, probably sooner than later).  You can also slipstream the bulk of the post-SP2 updates.  (This is another great time saver when doing multiple installs.)  See either  udp.xable.net or   www.ryanvm.net/msfn.

You do NOT want to install using XP Pro with no Service Packs, and then install XP Pro SP2 on top.  There's nothing to be gained by doing it that way.  Just start with SP2.

For a freeware imaging program, I haven't used it, but DriveImage XML from runtime.org gets good marks.  If you have to do a full install, and you're not otherwise using your 100 GB drive. then I'd pprobably put the 200 GB Vista drive safely away and redo the 100 gigger, and not even mess with imaging.  Less to go wrong down the road.

DELL-Jimmy P : if that were true, then why would that horrible screeching/harsh noise all of a sudden stop AS SOON AS I unplug the AC adapter and the laptop runs just on battery. Is it possible that there is a ground loop issue somewhere in the chain between the laptop and the power supply unit? also, if anyone here has any idea where this speaker disabling option is, i'm all ears.

I don't know, but if you unplug the mic and it stops then it is probably feedback. Did it do this in Vista?
