keeping programs open when closing laptop?

My laptop goes into sleep mode when closed, and theoretically my programs are supposed to stay open, right? However, every time I close my laptop I get signed off of the AOL instant messenger program. Is there any way to stay signed onto the program and still close the laptop? Or is it a lost cause...? Thanks in advance

The reason for it logging you out of AOL Instant Messenger is when the computer goes to sleep, I believe the network connections close. If you'd like to change what the computer does when you close the lid, go to Control Panel then Power Options. On the left hand side you should see 'Choose what closing the lid does.' Click on that and change it to 'Do nothing.' Hopefully, when you close the lid, it won't log you out.
