glassdecor,

You will need to have the keyboard replaced.  It is typing the wrong letters and characters.  You will need to contact the Dell Techies by phone or chat to arrange for a replacement.

ran the diagnostics (F12). custom test on keyboard, if it passed. reinstall operating system. if it failed possible keyboard failure or motherboard.

Wow the exact same thing has happened to me. Same model too. Inspiron 2200. A new keyboard is in the mail right now. Oh it just suddenly stopped. My "m" keytop has broken off too. It seems like the 2200's keyboard might be a problem. Unfortunately you have to send the old keyboard back to Dell for some reason. I think thats in Bangladesh because that is where the new keyboard is coming from. Good luck

I had the same problem.

I tried :
- new BIOS,
- a brand new keyboard
-  even a brand new mainboard :

the problem was persisting.

The reason is.... the touchpad.

Once upplugged, the keyboard started to work properly. (Dell is sending me a new touchpad)

That is really messed up. I seriously doubt that is the reason for my problem. I believe it is circuit problems in the keyboard itself. I have replaced and it is alright now. If the touchpad is somehow negatively affecting the performance of the keyboard then Dell probably shouldn't be making computers or buying from a useless computer parts supplier. This was a really annoying problem, and as a university student I had trouble dealing with the UPS tag Dell was playing with me. I don't mind sending the part back, but maybe allow a little more time.

I  have swapped the touchpad (actually, Dell has sent me a new palmrest) and it works perfectly now.

I don't see any prob with UPS you are talking about : usually, I put the sticker on the box and call UPS to collect it.
