laptop for scientific computing
Dear forum members,
I have a question regarding which laptop to buy. I am a long time (since '98) Dell user (Inspiron 5ke and Latitude D 610). In short, my requirements are:
# Heavy number crunching (running large numerical models)
# processing large amounts of data
# visualization (python, tcl/tk, IDL, vis5d)
i.e., scientific computing under GNU/Linux OS.
Of course, desktop would be the best bet... but are there any laptop models optimized for the above? And, are there any benchmarks (performance comparison) available? I wouldn't want to buy anything like the D 610, because I have seen CPU temps beyond 70C for computationally intensive apps (running numerical models). I came across the precision series on DELL's website. But I would like some input before I decide.
Thanks in advance for your time and any help/suggestions!

You can use a high performance external laptop cooler to extend the usefulness of high performance laptops by keeping the temperature rises of the CPU, GPU and HDD within sensible limits.
By "high performance" cooler I mean the following:
Aluminum frame; multiple fans with minimum 3000 RPM: fans powered from plugpack rather than USB port.
Such coolers are noisy!!!

Try this http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DYDWHF1&s=dhs with the fastest CPU and the 7200RPM HD.

your best bet is to go with alienware... dell bought alienware, so its all the same

you dont need top of the line video card for straight number crunching, but this computer can have the X9000 (currently the fastest mobile processor available).
alienware is ment for high-performance gaming, so heat shouldnt be an issue.
